About this listen

With one call, her daughter’s life is on the line.

Laurie Ahmadi has worked as a 911 police dispatcher in her quiet Northern California town for nearly two decades. She considers the department her family; her husband, Omid, is its first Arab American chief, and their teenage daughter, Jojo, has grown up with the force. So when Laurie catches a 911 call and, to her horror, it’s Jojo, the whole department springs into action.

Jojo, drugged, disoriented, and in pain, doesn’t remember how she ended up at the home of Kevin Leeds, a pro football player famous for his on-the-field activism and his work with the CapB - “Citizens Against Police Brutality” - movement. She doesn’t know what happened to Kevin’s friend and trainer, whose beaten corpse is also discovered in the house. And she has no idea where her best friend Harper, who was with her earlier in the evening, could be.

But when Jojo begins to dive into Harper’s social media to look for clues to her whereabouts, Jojo uncovers a shocking secret that turns everything she knew about Harper - and the police department - on its head. With everything they thought they could rely on in question, Laurie and Jojo begin to realize that they can't trust anyone to find Harper except themselves...and time is running out.

Critic reviews

“Exciting storytelling and great characters make Stolen Things a powerhouse read. The writing is superb and I can’t wait for her next book!” (Iris Johansen, New York Times best-selling author)

"An addictive thriller that starts with a bang and only gets more twisted as you read." (Hello Giggles)

"Herron has worked as a 911 dispatcher for many years, and her debut is infused with both the emotional truths and daily details of her life’s work.... A textbook study of tension and secrets in small-town America." (CrimeReads)

This was a really good book.
It was the author’s first book (I think?? ..she wrote it under a pseudonym). It was fast paced and unpredictable. She was once a 911 dispatcher herself, which helped give perspective into a world most of us don’t get to experience.
I’ll be watching for other books written by her.

Thrilling in parts, subtle in others. This book has the knowledge and background in policing to back it up. It's a rare thing and I love it. A genuinely good read. Worth it.

I really loved this book. Lots of twists and it was paced well and I would recommend. I’ve read the authors other titles under her real name and I enjoyed their sweetness, but this book is totally different and equally enjoyable! The relationship between the mother and daughter is particularly well done.

Timely story

I am blown away how amazing this story is. yes there are sensitive subjects but it was done so well! I read hundreds of books a year and this one is probably one of my top favorites! I will definitely read more by this author. r.h. herron is the pseudonym for Rachael herron. I'm hoping she writes more thriller/suspense books.

the narration was phenomenal as well as the story

R.H. Herron has made her mark in this genre. Loved the mother-daughter mystery-solving team, twisty turns, flawed characters, depths of a mother’s love. Highly recommended!

A great story of triumph

I know you will see reviews stating this story is too far fetched and that the use of 16 yr old girls is wrong, but those reviews are wrong. Rape and sexual abuse happens to all ages. Black lives do matter. This story is a reflection of our society. if one ignores it, it will only get worse.

This was a fantastic, fast paced story and performance! It's worth it!!

All i can say is wow!!! I don’t think the story is true because the author says that it is not, but it’s one of the Most realistic intricate plots ever. I have never been a huge mystery… police....Reader enjoying more historical fiction but this has changed my opinion! Love love love must-read
