Publisher's summary

Stoicism philosophy from the greats.

Do you want to know the ancient philosophy of Stoicism? Where is the best place to begin? Where can you find joy?

Many have probably heard about Stoicism, but not all are entirely familiar with what Stoicism is all about. Stoicism pertains to the Greek philosophy exclusively developed by Zeno of Citium in 300 BC as the refinement of the Cynicism.

This philosophy was mainly influenced by Cynics and Socrates and taught self-control as a means of overcoming negative and destructive emotions.

Stoicism is widely known to originate as Hellenistic philosophy in Athens in 300 BCE.

The term Stoicism came from Stoa Poikile, which is also known as a painted porch. This is an open market found in Athens where original Stoics met and used to teach philosophy.

Eventually, Stoicism moved to Rome. It significantly flourished during the empire period, being alternatively persecuted by the emperors who were against it, like the Domitian and Vespasian, and embraced openly by the emperors who tried living by this philosophy.

Marcus Aurelius was the most prominent Stoic. Stoicism influenced Christianity and many other well-known philosophical figures all through the ages.

One of the best things about Stoicism is that you can read primary texts and read books as if they were just written yesterday and not thousands of years ago.
