About this listen
In this spirited sequel to the acclaimed The Rook, Myfanwy Thomas returns to clinch an alliance between deadly rivals and avert epic - and slimy - supernatural war.
When secret organizations are forced to merge after years of enmity and bloodshed, only one person has the fearsome powers - and the bureaucratic finesse - to get the job done. Facing her greatest challenge yet, Rook Myfanwy Thomas must broker a deal between two bitter adversaries:
The Checquy - the centuries-old covert British organization that protects society from supernatural threats, and...
The Grafters - a centuries-old supernatural threat.
But as bizarre attacks sweep London, threatening to sabotage negotiations, old hatreds flare. Surrounded by spies, only the Rook and two women who absolutely hate each other can seek out the culprits before they trigger a devastating otherworldly war.
Stiletto is a novel of preternatural diplomacy, paranoia, and snide remarks from an author who "adroitly straddles the thin line between fantasy, thriller, and spoof" (Booklist).

Story
I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life. Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I’m concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I’m not joining his pack of adoring fans. I don’t need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts; I’m probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I’ll level mountains and kill untold millions, making myself the dark queen of the world.

Story
1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. Babel is the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as its knowledge serves the Empire’s quest for colonization.

A weekly newspaper dedicated to the weird and the wonderful (but mostly the weird), The Stranger Times is the go-to publication for the unexplained and inexplicable. At least that's their pitch. The reality is rather less auspicious. Their editor is a drunken, foul-tempered and foul-mouthed husk of a man who thinks little of the publication he edits. His staff are a ragtag group of misfits. And as for the assistant editor...well, that job is a revolving door - and it has just revolved to reveal Hannah Willis, who's got problems of her own.

Story
Koschei the Deathless is to Russian folklore what devils or wicked witches are to Western European culture: a menacing, evil figure; the villain of countless stories that have been passed on through story and text for generations. But Koschei has never before been seen through the eyes of Catherynne Valente, whose modernized and transformed take on the legend brings the action to modern times, spanning many of the great developments of Russian history in the 20th century.

Story
Out on the Yorkshire Moors lives a secret line of people for whom books are food, and who retain all of a book's content after eating it. To them, spy novels are a peppery snack; romance novels are sweet and delicious. Eating a map can help them remember destinations, and children, when they misbehave, are forced to eat dry, musty pages from dictionaries.

This was a good book and will be a great movie!
While I found Rook to be a superior (incredible) audible experience, I think Stiletto will translate into the better movie.
I encourage Daniel to keep the series going but restrain from the temptation to get lost in the supernatural, it is best used as the spice rather than the main ingredient. There are so few writers that can provide the reader engaging entertainment while not leaving them feeling guilty for intellectually slumming it. It is not only facts that stimulate the mind but intelligent imagination with a big dose of fun to boot, thank you and keep up the good work.

Moira Quirk's performance deserves a sixth star.
The story wasn't quite as good as Rook - I found some of the viewpoint and timeline jumps jarring. The humor or the Rook was still there and the author's use of conversational exposition over info-dumps is appreciated.
Moira Quirk made the experience. Her ability to give each character their own voice and her consistency in delivery made the experience immersive. I particularly appreciated her ability to deliver the many oneliners and throwaway asides without breaking stride.

an absolutely magnificent follow up to Rook!
Excellent fast moving story full of wit, charm, hilarity, and heart. Stiletto is well written with excellent twists and turns, excellently performed, and didn't let go until the very end. Well done!

Best new series
I almost didn’t buy this after reading all the whiny review, but I loved the first book so much I took a chance. Hello! It’s amazing! Those reviews that complained about the “history” interspersed with the action....did you not read the first book with the letters from Rook Thomas interspersed with action? It works! The “history” is all fantastical sequences that are just as riveting as the present. The subtle and unexpected humor, the clever and the absurd, and the complex and fascinating characters on both sides of the political spectrum are rich and rewarding, and I pray for the good health and continued inspiration of Mr O’Malley! Keep them coming, please! And keep Moira Quirk - she is beyond talented and her accents are superb and easy to distinguish.
