Publisher's summary

Years ago, an overachieving and harried young mother accidentally flushed her gold watch down the toilet. Time passed, but the image of the lost watch continued to haunt her, a symbol of an overcommitted life. Two decades later, propelled by a series of curious coincidences, she leaves behind her busy professional life, her cell phone, and her family to escape the tyranny of time and walk 500 miles across Northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela.

Steps out of Time brings the mysterious and wonderful world of the Camino to life with its tales of serendipitous encounters, new friends made (and one tragically lost), stunning natural beauty, and unforgettable food. By the end of her journey, an exhausted and exhilarated Katharine Soper is keenly aware she has completed much more than a monthlong walk.

A must for Pilgrims Virgins

At 74 and contemplating a pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago, I found the author's experiences to be informative and inspiring. If she can do it as a solo walker at 57, so can I. The narration was spot on but got a bit nasal at times. Put this on your To Do list before attempting the walk.

Excellent Story

Not just a narrative of walking the Camino but beautiful insights into the lessons of the trip. I also enjoyed the tone of the reader's voice.

Authentic review of the journey

In Step out of Time by Kate Soper, what truly shines is the authenticity of the journey and how the pilgrims gradually find themselves along the way. Soper masterfully highlights not just the physical aspects of the hike, but the inner transformation that occurs when one slows down to appreciate the process, rather than focusing solely on reaching the destination. The detailed moments of reflection, the connections made with fellow pilgrims, and the peaceful encounters with nature emphasize the importance of being present in the journey. This is a story about self-discovery, where the path itself is just as meaningful as the arrival.

A good alternative to being in the camino during the pandemic.

As an avid Camino walker, I really enjoyed this book. Every camino is different as is everyone’s experience on the way. Being unable to be in the camino because of the Covid pandemic, the book brought me back So I could re-live the experience.

Enjoyed this book very much!

I really enjoyed this book and the story it told. The author’s tale of her pilgrimage on The Camino de Santiago has enticed me to dream of going one day myself. I recommend this book to those wondering what life on this particular pilgrimage is like. She has a firm hold on describing every aspect.

Great insight into the joy and pain of pilgrimage

Very well read. Such great description I feel like I would recognize places along the trail based and look for small treasures found in these chapgers. A great way to present the aches, pains, love, sweat, and tears that go into slowing down enough to get to really know ourselves.... plus the grand adventure of pilgrimage... and through hiking.
