Publisher's summary

Christians should have the answers, shouldn't they?

Depression affects many people - both personally and through the ones we love. Depression is not new, though. Indeed, the "Prince of Preachers" C.H. Spurgeon struggled with depression and talked openly about it. Here, Zack Eswine draws from Spurgeon's experiences to encourage us. What Spurgeon found in his darkness can serve as a light in our own darkness.

This is not a self-help guide but rather "a handwritten note" of one who wishes you well.

Balm for strugglers

This book is beautiful. Sweet, encouraging, a balm to a struggler's soul. It is written with a tone of 'from one fellow struggler to another.' ❤️

A great comfort to those who suffer

Spurgeon’s suffering and insights are described with honesty, clarity, and kindness.

I have several people in my life (including myself) who suffer from depression and other forms of anguish. This book helped me better understand the experience, and be more compassionate.

Helpful Insight

I love the backdrop of using one of the greatest communicators in church history. Spurgeon’s life was filled with difficult circumstances and this book brought those to the forefront. It also gave good insight into dealing with our own mental health. I did feel the performance itself was a bit lackluster, however the content of the book is worth the listen/read.

Helpful & Inspiring

Zach Eswine has written a beautiful story on the ministries of Charles Spurgeon. Chapter 11 was an emotional roller coaster for me, so I had to put the book aside for a bit.
All in all it was uplifting and a worthy read!

A powerful look at mental health

A powerful exploration of mental health as seen through the life of one of the greatest preachers of all time, Charles H. Spurgeon. Many truths about depression and how to make it through are discussed. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have read it twice now. The second time around I took copious notes.
