Publisher's summary

William Kent Krueger—“a master storyteller at the top of his game” (Kristin Hannah)—returns with a breathtaking new novel in his New York Times bestselling Cork O’Connor series.

After the teenage daughter of a prominent Minnesota politician goes missing, a huge manhunt is launched to find her. But when Cork O’Connor’s grandson Waaboo stumbles across the shallow grave of a young Ojibwe woman while hunting blueberries, nobody seems to care. Nobody, that is, except Cork and the newly formed Iron Lake Ojibwe Tribal Police Department. As Cork and the tribal officers dig into the circumstances of her murder, they discover a link to the missing girl that suggests these are not isolated incidents, but evidence of something much more sinister.

Already, tensions in the small town of Aurora, Minnesota, are high as residents gather to protest an oil pipeline that is being constructed through the pristine forests sacred to the Ojibwe at a place known as Spirit Crossing. In the meantime, little Waaboo, who has a unique connection with the dead woman, has become a target for the killers, and Cork’s daughter, Annie, has returned home with a secret that threatens to tear the family apart. The closer Cork gets to finding the answers he seeks, the more he fears for the people he loves.

The story was put together very well.

I had trouble putting it down. The story made me want to continue way past my bedtime.

Annie’s illness

Davis chandler is an excellent narrator and I liked hearing about all the characters. It’s been awhile.

A thrilling story and modern issues

I have to admit I am a great fan of Kruger. His stories are not only great mysteries, but contain a morality that I find refreshing.
His respectful treatment of missing women, especially Native Women, made this story informative, compelling and inspiring.

Thanks to the author for portraying the Anishinaabe in their humanity and possibility. Miigwech.

profound and moving

I have listened to each book in this series and am an avid listener of audio books. This author has become one of my favorites. This book, as each in the series has been, is a unique blend of mystery and excitement but it also carries very deep and heartfelt emotions if you have become attached to the characters as I have. I cried when Annie passed this life to begin her journey to the next. I look forward to the next and I hope many more books in this series. Excellent work. Your stories touch my soul and my spirit. I have Cherokee blood in my heritage on both sides of my family. Your stories while I realize dont involve my Tribal affiliation have encouraged me to learn more about and more closely embrace my native heritage. Thank you.

Enjoyed the whole series

I love the message in Mr. Krueger’s books. I love the fact that in every single book, I was able to “see” all of this in my mind’s eye. I felt as if I were right there in the story.

Outstanding as usual!

Love this family and as always, I learn about the “boundary waters” far from where I’ve lived. This book was sad in many ways but uplifting on many other ways. I love this family of characters and am happy to come home to catchup. Looking forward to #21.

Not quite what I was expecting

As always there is a good story with a mystery to be solved. Learning more about the plight of our First Nation people is sad as Krueger educates the reader with the story of how so many girls are affected. Will this book change what is happening to young girls? One would hope. No spoilers however I was very sad with the ending of the book.

Realistic view of Ojibwe life

I like the perspectives of the author. Characters' cultures are evident in their thoughts and feelings. Krueger realistically presents information on sex trafficking of indigenous women as well as life in a backwoods area. My home state of NM and several other states where I've lived experience the same overwhelming problem, This problem extends to all cultures and ages. This book is a good learning experience. The audiobook story is well written and easy to follow. Another terrific book by Krueger.
