Publisher's summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • An official Oprah Winfrey’s “The Books That Help Me Through” selection • The acclaimed Nobel Prize winner transfigures the coming-of-age story with this brilliantly imagined novel. Includes a new foreword by the author.

Milkman Dead was born shortly after a neighborhood eccentric hurled himself off a rooftop in a vain attempt at flight. For the rest of his life he, too, will be trying to fly. As Morrison follows Milkman from his rustbelt city to the place of his family’s origins, she introduces an entire cast of strivers and seeresses, liars and assassins, the inhabitants of a fully realized Black world.

“Morrison moves easily in and out of the lives and thoughts of her characters, luxuriating in the diversity of circumstances and personality, and revelling in the sound of their voices and of her own, which echoes and elaborates theirs.” —The New Yorker

All time Best American Author

I've loved this book since 1977. It is my favorite of all of Dr Toni Morrison's books, and it gave me chills up and down my spine to hear it read in her own voice. There is no one who can paint tapestries with words except Dr Morrison. This book should be required reading by all American high schools.

What a wonder

This was the first book I read as a teen that celebrated black life and wonder. It made me delve into the rich history of my own family and I am forever grateful for Song of Solomon and its writer Alice Walker. Hearing read by the author and revisiting the novel 40 years later, I recognize my own flight. Thank you Alice Walker, you were loved.

Genius!!!

I have read a few works by Ms. Morrison and I have to say that each one I have read is a genius piece of work and this one is no exception! I can not say enough about how brilliantly written this book is. It is masterful! This book was recommended to me so I would encourage others to read this book as well. Naturally being the author of such a magnificent book she narrated this piece with just the right feeling intended. Thank you for this work Ms. Morrison! By far, my favorite book I have read this year!

Beautiful story

I love books narrated by the author, but this one went a little slow for me. Jack the speed up if you are ADD and it will be a beautiful, heart breaking ride.

Literature of the highest order

It’s a little hard to get into, and the story doesn’t really leave the ground until the protagonist leaves home which is more than halfway through the book, but the rewards are huge.
