Publisher's summary
Beautiful Sorcha is the courageous young woman who risked all to save her family from a wicked curse and whose love shattered generations of hate and bridged two cultures. It is from her sacrifice that Sorcha's brothers were brought home to their ancestral fortress Sevenwaters, and her life has known much joy. But not all the brothers were able to fully escape the spell that transformed them into swans, and it is left to Sorcha's daughter, Liadan, to help fulfill the destiny of the Sevenwaters clan. Beloved child and dutiful daughter, Liadan embarks on a journey that shows her just how hard-won was the peace that she has known all her life.
Liadan will need all of her courage to help save her family, for there are dark forces and ancient powers conspiring to destroy this family's peace - and their world. And she will need all of her strength to stand up to those she loves best, for in the finding of her own true love, Liadan's course may doom them all...or be their salvation.

Story
Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th-century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trades she uses to get by - palm readings, zars, and a mysterious gift for healing - are all tricks, both the means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles and a reliable way to survive. But when Nahri accidentally summons Dara, an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior, to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to reconsider her beliefs.

Story
It was that transitional time of the world when man first brought the clang of iron and the reek of smoke to the lands which before had echoed only with fairy voices. In that dawn of man and death of magic, there yet remained one last untouched place - the small forest of Ealdwood - which kept the magic intact and protected the old ways. And there was one who dwelt there, Arafel the Sidhe, who had more pride and love of the world as it used to be than any of her kind.

I love the way the series picks up not exactly where I expected it to pick up. I love the way it ties this book to the last one and sets up the next book. I can't wait to read Child of the Prophecy.
I wish the names didn't change though.

The next generation
We now follow Red and his 'Jenny' back to Seven Rivers where the brothers and 'one small sister' grow up, marry or run off or die...Their father reaches old age and dies and now it's The next generation, the nieces and nephew of the six brothers, children of the one small sister...
This is another really good story about Druidic magic and old Irish mythology. The battle between England and Christianity and Ireland and the old ways. It's a good listen.

Better than the first!
As if these books could improve. yeah right! Then, all of a sudden, number two is just that much better! The difference in narration threw me off. Though I soon realized that there was good reson! I love how we don't get stuck in the same family members' drama over and over. Rather, its like an episode of the Kardashians, and every season is the next generation. Not much to critique, its just so good, and left me happy! Great series👏 on to the next👏

Another great Sevenwaters book for Marillier
I'm so pleased that I continued on with the Sevenwaters series by Marillier, who has created a wonderful world of old-world fantasy. I recommend this book and will continue with the next book. The characters are very deep and the story well thought out. Marillier is a master of writing stories that draw you in and make you wish they didn't end.
The only thing that I would mention as a criticism is that the new narrator pronounced some names differently than the previous narrator for book 1. I understand the change in narrator since the primary character changed, but the names should be pronounced the same way.

The author has a wonderful way with words. The story keeps you captivated. I couldn't wait to finish, so I could start book 3.

Great Book
What did you love best about Son of the Shadows?
The story is engaging. I fell in love with the lead characters myself!
What did you like best about this story?
The twists and turns in the storyline. I don't like to be able to guess what's coming next.
What about Rosalyn Landor’s performance did you like?
I loved the lilt in her voice. Didn't really like the male voice she did though.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Can you truly choose your own path?
Any additional comments?
I've read some reviews and others didn't like the change in narrators and at first I agreed (mainly I just loved the narrator of the first book) but after getting used to Rosalyn I'm almost glad you have a different narrator for each book. It's as if the new narrator signifies the change in the story from one child to the next.

Not the best at the male voices
All the men sounded exactly the same, I got tired of it after a while, the first book narrator was a bit better. But still a good book.

Good Installment To The Series
I'm really enjoying this series. It's easy to get very involved in this world and characters.
I wasn't wild about this narrator at first. I didn't like her male characters in the beginning. I almost wondered if I wanted to stop and get the e-book instead, but it got better as the recording went on. I don't know if she got more comfortable and found her voice as the recording progressed or if I was so engrossed in the story I didn't notice anymore. Maybe a bit of both. It's interesting that Rosalyn pronounces Sorcha differently that the first and 3rd narrator.
