Publisher's summary

We've made a dent into the 21st century, and software has been eating the world. Suspenseful tech dramas play out in the news, boot camps churn out entry-level developers in a matter of months, and there's even an HBO show dedicated to Silicon Valley.

In the midst of these trends lies a severe lack of attention to the daily life of the developer - the day-to-day reality that surrounds each line of code. There are plenty of resources available to help the budding developer learn how to code, but what about everything else?

I enjoyed this read/listen

I enjoyed this read. I am currently a Software Engineer a couple years into my career and I found a lot of the material relatable and provides helpful insight. I will likely listen to it again

Thanks for the insights

I'm making the transition from Desktop\Network IT to a Dev roll. This gave me a little bit more insight into what to expect. There are some good tips in regards to how to interact with others (soft skills) that took me years to find out on my own. I would recommend this audio book to others looking or entertaining with the idea of becoming a software developer.

Great Book

David Chang has a great voice and is very honest about his journey with friends and just developer life in general.

Pretty bland, often wrong

This one did not appeal to me. With the risk of sounding arrogant, I think David Xiang needs a few more years under his belt before he's able to pull off this kind of book.

There are sections where he (or one his friends) tells a story from their past, explain why it was a mistake, and then move on to explain how they would have done it differently today. Except I keep thinking that their "current" solution would be equally bad, but for another reason.

This book also contains too many certainties. "Never", "always", "must", "can't" and so on. It does not go well with the overarching message of "be humble" in your opinions.

I also find the narration being somewhat tired and monotone, but the sound quality is good and it is not a big deal.

This is a return for me, but I still hope to see more from David in the future, perhaps after some further polishing of his style.
