Manual Jobs
About this listen
This is a complete guide to how to create a plan for, open, operate, and market a new small business.
Manual Jobs, the author, will walk you through the process of:
- Selecting your target audience to market to
- Recognizing what the pitfalls are that new business owners should avoid
- Finding financing if you need working capital for your new venture
- Setting up the correct type of business (sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability, or corporation)
- Setting achievable goals (long- and short-term)
- Getting a website in place
- And much, much more
Here is a tip on starting a business: Take time to write a business plan. Never use the fact that you are just starting a small business as an excuse to skip writing a formal business plan. You may not be proposing to anybody. You may not be facing a team of investors. You may not be looking forward to reaching out to angel investors. You may not even be thinking of applying for a bank loan. Still, you need a proper business plan.
Review your business plan often. Make changes to it in accordance with what is and is not working in your business. If you find one or two things that are really profitable in your adventures, alter your plan to accommodate getting laser focused on these areas.
In business, when you discover what is really working, you focus on ramping up those areas in order to make more money as fast as possible. Your business plan will help you see what is profitable.
As you can see, Manual Jobs offers suggestions that are easy to understand. Starting a small business does not have to be complicated.
This book intends to help you overcome fear and inspire you to own and operate your own small business.

Whether you've been in business for several decades or are breaking ground as a new entrepreneur, taxes are a significant expenditure. They must be accounted for and incorporated into your business plan from the very beginning. This concept of "being your own boss" is undoubtedly an alluring one. Nonetheless, not everyone can be a boss - not one decent or effective, at least. If you are actually an employee of someone (not a boss), it is perfectly natural to fantasize about owning a business of your own on those days when you are fed up with your current boss or work. The rags-to-rich stories you hear about entrepreneurs who have turned their visions into millions or even billions of dollars, make your fantasy even more attractive.

Perfect for getting started!
What made the experience of listening to Small Business: Helpful Ideas for Planning, Starting, and Marketing a Small Business the most enjoyable?
Small Business: Helpful Ideas for Planning, Starting, and Marketing a Small Business is great because it offers both motivational encouragement as well as pragmatic advice from an experienced business owner. The balance of both makes the work both inspiring and useful.
What other book might you compare Small Business: Helpful Ideas for Planning, Starting, and Marketing a Small Business to and why?
This is my first experience with a book on entrepreneurship -- it is something that I have recently become interested in because my family is attempting to open up a health food store. I can't, therefore, really offer any comparisons to other books on the topic, but I can say that, especially for a newcomer, Small Business is approachable and compelling.
Have you listened to any of J. Scott Bennett’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is the first time that I have listened to one of J. Scott Bennett's performances. His voice is engaging and he enunciates well -- very pleasant to listen to.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I really appreciated the reminder that many wealth business owners, tycoons, and famous entrepreneurs started out small. I think it is so important to keep in mind that great things can come from a good idea and some strong will.
Any additional comments?
I will say that, while the book has many strengths, I gave it 4 stars because I believe that practical advice, no matter how logical, should be informed by evidence. I believe that the pitfalls and checklists sections (chapters 4 and 5) would have seemed more credible if the author had offered examples from studies, real-life business owners, or even personal anecdotes.
