About this listen

Slough House is a dumping ground for British intelligence agents who've screwed up cases in any number of ways - by leaving a secret file on a train or blowing a surveillance. River Cartwright, one such "slow horse", is bitter about his failure and about his tedious assignment transcribing cell phone conversations.

When a young man is abducted and his kidnappers threaten to broadcast his beheading live on the Internet, River sees an opportunity to redeem himself.

Is the victim whom he first appears to be? And what's the kidnappers' connection with a disgraced journalist? As the clock ticks on the execution, River finds that everyone has his own agenda.

Great Alternative Spyware Story

Great British spy story - battle between bureaucratic office politics players and carreer screw ups lead by a seedy unattractive has been. No James Bond in sight but great characters. Then of course there is kidnapping, murder and the threat of a live streamed beheading to keep things moving.

Interesting idea with so-so implementation

Slough House is about a group of intelligence agency screw-ups sent out to pasture with unimportant cases. Narration by Gerard Doyle is wonderful which is more than this book deserves.

Slow burner.

Slow start and not crazy about the narrator but it gathers steam and really keeps you gripped from middle to end. If you like spy thrillers dramas this is for you.

Prideaux’s People

One cannot review modern English spy fiction without referring to LeCarre anymore than one can review American crime fiction of the same era without referring to James Ellroy. I could have picked Greene and Hammet, respectively, and I’m sure many could argue that I should have, but I think not.

Mick Herron is the only writer of English spy fiction who belongs in the same sentence as LeCarre. Don Winslow is the only American crime writer who challenges the Demon Dog.
Alan Furst and Phillip Kerr, as good as they are, belong to different masters. Into the fray, as needs must.
Slow Horses is a tremendous bit of work. Satisfying on all levels and provocative on many.

Witty prose and twisty action

Herron’s writing is clever and fresh, his characters distinctly drawn — although Doyle’s narration doesn’t provide distinct voices for all of them. The levels of subterfuge and betrayal at work kept me guessing what would happen next!

Great intrigue!

This story was kinda confusing at first, but once I realized this was not a “passive listener” type of book, I started paying attention and WOW was I surprised. The thoughts and backstories of each character were so thoroughly explained. Even the bystander’s thoughts were worth knowing. Mr Doyle is a fantastic narrator, very calm, very British. I think this was a great book and would recommend

Slow Horse Might Win

This book did get off to a bit of a slow start for me, but by the second chapter a great story started developing. This was an engaging look at the “real world“ of intelligence officers and their internal intrigues and bureaucratic realities. The reading was excellent.

Excellent read

Captivating! Written with various “scenes” happening simultaneously. Perfectly British dialogue and wonderfully performed as such. Meticulously created characters with the writer taking the time to let his reader ‘step-into’ the inner thought life of each.

Super excited to find this new series

Found Herron recommended for the strength of the reader- Gerard Doyle- who does not disappoint. A lot of dry humor as well. Highly recommended.

Boring

Everyone raves about this book and it’s sequels but I found this boring. Listened about 5 hours before finally giving up. Too much description, too less action.
