About this listen

Audible are delighted to present Sleeping Beauty, a unique listening experience for all the family to enjoy over the Christmas season. This exclusive new audio drama has been created in collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra and is inspired by Tchaikovsky's beloved ballet music. Marty Ross’s reimagining of the famous fairy story draws on the worlds of folktale and the Brothers Grimm, while the LSO's specially-commissioned new recording, conducted by Gavin Sutherland, weaves through the drama like a rich and majestic film score.

Lacking a legitimate heir, King Lothar (Stephen Fry) brings home a baby girl, Aurora (Phoebe Dynevor). His wife, Queen Ishbel, agrees to raise the child as her own and Princess Aurora grows up to become a beautiful, beloved and free-spirited young woman. But a shadow hangs over the kingdom. Devastated at her loss, Aurora’s mother Cara (Rochenda Sandall) takes her revenge by casting a terrible curse upon the princess and despite her sister Lila's efforts, the spell proves too powerful to break completely. Instead, when the fatal hour arrives, the whole Kingdom falls into an enchanted slumber, until Aurora's true love, Peter, a woodcutter's son (Adam Hugill), sets out on a perilous quest to rescue her.

Also starring: David Ahmad, Karen Bartke, Samantha Beart, Raghad Chaar, Amy Darton, Alyssa Kyria, David Holt, Simon Kane, Harry Myers and Kenton Thomas.

A fresh audio take on a spellbinding classic
No matter how old you get, it’s indisputable there’s a kind of magic in the air during the holiday season. From the twinkling glow of lights from rooftops and window displays alike and the swirling glimmer of snow flurries, winter moments can feel like they’re pulled straight from the pages of a fairy tale. So, what better way to usher in the festivities than with a classic folk story set to a stirring score performed by the London Symphony Orchestra? In the immersive and enchanting Sleeping Beauty, performances by the likes of fan favorite Stephen Fry and Bridgerton’s Phoebe Dynevor are punctuated by a soundscape inspired by ballet master Tchaikovsky’s acclaimed compositions. A retelling of the story of Princess Aurora and the somnolent curse that befalls her kingdom, this engrossing fantastical drama makes the perfect companion for a warm, cozy blanket, a mug of tea, and a windy, wintry day. —Alanna M., Audible Editor

So enjoyable!

The London Symphony Orchestra playing Tchaikovsky Sleeping Beauty made this book 100% better! Highly recommend.

This was different . . .

But I liked it. It made the King the villain (which technically he was in the live action movie). It also didn't necessarily make Maleficent the hero or the villain. She was kind of . . . both. It was different and I liked the twist.

The REAL story and done so well!

When Disney adapted these classics, most of the deeper analogies and lessons were lost. This cast is AMAZING. I have recommended this version to several families. I’d say it’s great for ages 9-99

The retelling is beautiful and the casts, gosh

LOVED IT, absolutely loved it. Oh my God, I didn’t expect Maleficent as the biological mother of Aurora and how patriarchy worked in time like this. And the king, ugh. But it’s so short😩 I kind of miss it now

Loved the music and voices!

As a child, my mom allowed us to expand our imagination using music. We would identify the emotion of the music and dance to it, using our bodies to describe it.

So, having a story told with music in the background was just marvellous. I feel that it really does expand the imagination and all the emotion that go with it!

Well done to all the musicians and actors!

Fantastic!

Brings back memories of seeing Sleeping Beauty at the ballet and enjoying the score by Tchaikovsky; but this has the added bonus of the story being voiced by incredible actors. Very well done! Just close your eyes and you can envision it all. Beautiful production.
