Publisher's summary

In Sisters of the Yam, bell hooks reflects on the ways in which the emotional health of black women has been and continues to be impacted by sexism and racism. Desiring to create a context where black females could both work on their individual efforts for self-actualization while remaining connected to a larger world of collective struggle, hooks articulates the link between self-recovery and political resistance. Both an expression of the joy of self-healing and the need to be ever vigilant in the struggle for equality, Sisters of the Yam continues to speak to the experience of black womanhood.

So Insightful

This book was recommended to me, as I am on a journey of healing. The language was easy to digest and the narration was great! I am going to reread but take notes. This book was so insightful to me as a young black woman navigating life with trauma on her back. The baggage seems lighter now.

Brilliantly Written

Bell Hooks went straight to the point. She touched on the politics that black women encountered and how we as black women should come together. I appreciate her for writing down about what it takes to heal and the hopefulness and ability to heal.

entertaining

im not black or a woman. just started listening to this because bell hooks. just wanted something intellectually interesting, not jargon filled, and something unrelated to my usual research so i could feel i was being productive and learning without having to think about my work. glad to say it did not disappoint
