Acerca de esta escucha

'A second’s silence and then an almighty scream. It was the most moving thing I had ever seen…. A baby, a real live baby, another human life had entered the world. It didn’t seem possible and yet I had witnessed it with my very own eyes.'

Born into a happy working-class North London family in the mid-20th century, Katie is determined to 'do something' with her life. Working in the impoverished East End in the 1950s, she meets the Sisters of St John the Divine – a community of nuns dedicated to nursing and midwifery. The Sisters have been present at births, cared for the sick, and laid out the dead of the East Enders for a hundred years, and Katie soon joins them to start her journey to becoming Sister Catherine Mary.

As a nurse and midwife, Katie learns to deal with everything from strokes to breech births. Tragedy is never far away, but there are also moments of pure joy as lives are saved and the Poplar residents rally round. As a young novice Katie rallies against the vow of obedience, yet over the years learns much about the nature of dedication and love.

Full of desperate hardship, humour and compassion, Katie’s story brings to life the unique world of these nursing Sisters in London’s East End.

Sister Catherine Mary’s story was written by Helen Batten after in-depth interviews with today’s Sisters of the Community of St John the Divine.

The story is so full of compassion that draws you into the lives of these communities and families. There is such genuine love, empathy and dignity that was given and received by the families Cathrine Mary and other sisters touched.

After watching "Call the Midwife" for several seasons, it was interesting to hear the story of one nun, nurse, and midwife and how she arrived at her life calling.

A worthy read

What did you love best about Sisters of the East End?

The honesty and faith in the characters

What was one of the most memorable moments of Sisters of the East End?

When sister Catherine met The Lord at the crossroads of her faith and found God had not left her.

Have you listened to any of Annie Aldington’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. As real and clear as Call the Midwife was. Transported me into that time and social culture.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Don't know

Any additional comments?

I am keen to find similar books. I love them

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about how the sisters of the east and worked in lived in the communities it was a true gift to hear the story from the perspective of somebody with faith, faced with trials, and tribulations share with stood or difficulties, and achieved much for the glory of the Lord.

Exceptional book

Beautifully and realistically narrated, this tells a story parallel to the television show from BBC more from the perspective of the nuns. Lovely story .

If you enjoy “Call the Midwife” you will enjoy this.

This is a story and read like a story, with no dramatization or changing of voices for characters. I thought it would be more like Call The Midwife, with lots of funny bits and interesting case histories, but it isn't. It's really about one woman's faith journey as a nun, and she happens to be a midwife for several years along the way. I stuck with it until the end, but it wasn't what I was expecting.

Okay but not what I expected
