Publisher's summary

This blood-chilling debut set in New Mexico’s Navajo Nation is equal parts gripping crime thriller, supernatural horror, and poignant portrayal of coming of age on the reservation

Rita Todacheene is a forensic photographer working for the Albuquerque police force. Her excellent photography skills have cracked many cases—she is almost supernaturally good at capturing details. In fact, Rita has been hiding a secret: she sees the ghosts of crime victims who point her toward the clues that other investigators overlook.

As a lone portal back to the living for traumatized spirits, Rita is terrorized by nagging ghosts who won’t let her sleep and who sabotage her personal life. Her taboo and psychologically harrowing ability was what drove her away from the Navajo reservation, where she was raised by her grandmother. It has isolated her from friends and gotten her in trouble with the law.

And now it might be what gets her killed.

When Rita is sent to photograph the scene of a supposed suicide on a highway overpass, the furious, discombobulated ghost of the victim—who insists she was murdered—latches onto Rita, forcing her on a quest for revenge against her killers, and Rita finds herself in the crosshairs of one of Albuquerque’s most dangerous cartels. Written in sparkling, gruesome prose, Shutter is an explosive debut from one of crime fiction's most powerful new voices.

Featured Article: Best of the Year—The 15 Best Mysteries and Thrillers of 2022

This year was an amazingly fruitful one for mysteries and thrillers. As we tried to narrow this list down, a popular refrain among editors was: "Don’t forget this, don’t forget that, and what about this?" Some of us liked when the twists and turns began within the first few minutes, while others were happy to go on the rocky, thrilling rides the genre provides with a little guessing along the way. But we’re sure about one thing—this list is simply the best.

very depressing

I found it very difficult to finish this book. I kept hoping it would get better, it just didn't. The characters were so interesting and when you get to know some of them you hope things will be better for them. The narration was really very well done.

Can't wait for a sequel.

I love how Indigenous culture, supernatural, and mystery were tied together, and the narrator kept me engaged in the story. It was another book I was sad to end, as I enjoyed the time I spent listening to t. I understand this is intended as a trilogy and I really hope there is another.

A bit Gory

If you can get past the detailed descriptions of the death crime scene photos, this is an interesting story. The warmth of the photographer’s family ties is touching. However, it seems too long. Maybe an edit of some of the ghost scenes would be in order.

Interesting new take on our inner selves

I like the way our inner selves are presented and how they can pursue justice for wrongs against us.

Interesting. Unique perspective.

An easy listen. Pretty interesting twist overall. Bought on a whim after hearing end of interview with author. Didn’t know what to expect but was quite enjoyable.

Forensic Photographer story

Was pleasantly surprised by Native American views and details of forensic photography. Story and the narrative was unique and kept me listening nonstop.

Great narration

The narration was great. The voice actor did a suburb job telling the story. The story concept was good and I would have enjoyed it more but much of the story was drawn out. Book would have been better if about 1/3 of it was eliminated. I still recommend!

I can’t tell you how much I loved this!

Great story! I totally got into this story of ghosts, crime labs and the Navaho culture. I’m really hoping Ramona Emerson continues and makes this a series.
