About this listen

In this gripping thriller from New York Times best-selling author Linda Castillo, a devastating murder exposes an Amish family’s tortured past.

The peaceful town of Painters Mill is shattered when an Amish grandmother is brutally murdered on an abandoned farm. When Chief of Police Kate Burkholder arrives on the scene, she learns that the woman’s seven-year-old granddaughter is gone, abducted in plain sight. Kate knows time is against her - the longer the girl is missing, the less likely her safe return becomes. The girl’s family is a pillar of the Amish community, well-respected by all. But Kate soon realizes they’re keeping secrets - and the sins of their past may be coming back to haunt them. What are they hiding and why?

Kate’s investigation brings her to an isolated Old Order Amish settlement along the river, a community where family is everything and tradition is upheld with an iron fist. But the killer is close behind, drawing more victims into a twisted game of revenge. Left behind at each new crime scene are cryptic notes that lead Kate to a haunting and tragic secret. What she uncovers threatens to change everything she thought she knew about the family she’s fighting for, the Amish community as a whole - and her own beliefs.

As time to find the missing girl runs out, Kate faces a harrowing choice that will test her convictions and leave one family forever changed.

Praise for Kathleen McInerney as Kate Burkholder:

"McInerney's masterly technique makes aural sense of the plain and kind Amish people bewildered by the violence, thuggery, and corruption that have come among them. McInerney's characters are alive, all human and believable." (AudioFile Magazine on Among the Wicked)

"Kathleen McInerney does an excellent job of portraying this diverse cast, especially the Amish, who she instills with a shy, quiet dignity, and she handles the Pennsylvania Dutch language with the ease of a native." (Publishers Weekly on Pray for Silence)

Still fresh and interesting

I always devour the books in the Kate Burkeholder series. It amazes me that even on book 11 in the series, Castillo manages to keep things fresh and interesting. If it were not for a silly thing called work, I probably could have finished this one in a day. Another awesome read.

Long Live The Kate Burkholder Series!

Shamed (Kate Burkholder Book #11) by Linda Castillo

I’ve never started off a review with whether or not I liked or disliked the narration for the many audiobooks I listen to, but I feel the need to do so here. Kathleen McInerney has got to be one of the best narrators out there..Hands down, the best!!! She truly amazes me! She effortlessly goes from one characters voice to the next & allows the listener to easily differentiate, be it male or female, who each one is. Her “Pennsylvania Dutch” and how well she flips back and forth with that to the English language is impressive. I’ll finish up with saying I’m in awe of how well she’s able to pitch her voice making the young sound young, the old, old, male, male etc. etc. Great job Ms. McInerney!

Anyway, back to (audio)book review. I dropped all for this (audio)book and as with most Linda Castillo’s (audio)books I finished the same day I started it. What can I say? Linda Castillo has done it again. She immediately grabs the reader/listeners, pulls them in and takes’m on a fast paced, action packed ride.

Shamed immediately starts with the vicious murder of an Amish grandmother and the kidnapping of the woman’s 7-year-old special needs granddaughter. This immediately rolls into the investigation of “who done it” lead by Painters Mill current police chief Kate Burkholder, who also happens to be ex-Amish. Holding onto hope, it’s a race against the clock to not only find the child’s whereabouts, but in doing so, pray she’s still alive.

I’ve always been fascinated with the Amish and I love how Linda Castillo seamlessly parallels the mystery of the story to that of the true Amish way. She always leaves me satisfied when finishing her (audio)books, while feeling as though I’ve gotten a closer glimpse into how the Amish truly live. I will also say that I am forever wanting more from Kate’s relationship with her current love interest/live in boyfriend and FBI agent John “Tomasetti”.

This is a great (audio)book in an even greater series and although one doesn’t need to start at the beginning of series to understand this book, I highly recommend doing so. I say this because you will certainly appreciate understanding more about repeat characters backgrounds, while really enjoying each and every story Linda Castillo delivers. I look forward to book 12 next July....

Another winner from Linda Castillo

The stage is set with the first scene. Little girls gathering walnuts with their grandmother. What happens next sets Kate on a trail of Amish beliefs, violent crimes, and an endangered child. Pure Castillo!

I like everything about this series. Kate as the Police Chief, John Tomasetti as a strong cop on his own and a wonderful partner, the returning characters, the Amish community. It all fits so well.

As usual, Kathleen McInerney does a fabulous job with the narration.

Sadly, we have to wait again for the next book.

I loved this book with Kate and Tomesetti working together
He doesn’t take anything away from her abilities
He supports her and I hope we get to have more adventures of them together
Great stories with super twists
A relationship that is strong and adds to the mystery being solved
Can’t wait until there are and hoping many more to follow

Tangled webs...

I am a little surprised that there are some low ratings already left for this book. When I first started listening I noticed someone had left a one star rating with no review. That's not fair to the author or potential listeners.

This is such a good book. It is a vivid procedural that takes place in Painters Mill, OH. The characters are mostly Amish with the exception of the various law enforcement agencies. This is the 11th book in the series and although it can be listened to as a stand alone I would suggest listening to this series in order for continuity of characters and relationships.
In this book a grandmother takes her two young granddaughters out for the day to an abandoned farm for walnut picking. The grandmother is brutally murdered. One child hides and the other is abducted. More murders start taking place , all linking back to the abducted child. But the Amish people keep to themselves and getting information is no easy task. Each question that comes up requires a visit to that person's home as a phone call is not possible in this community.
As a person who grew up Amish but left the fold Kate Burkholder has insight but not always trust in this cloistered community. She's often scorned and viewed as an apostate. But the murders continue and a tense plot involving some of the most respected members in the the community comes to light.
Kathleen McInerney does a fantastic job narrating.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.
