About this listen

Sixteen-year-old Suzume is a shadow weaver, trained in the magical art of illusion. She can be anyone she wants to be - except herself.

Is she the girl of noble birth, trapped by the tyranny of her mother’s new husband, Lord Terayama? A lowly drudge scraping a living in the ashes of Terayama’s kitchens? Or Yue, the most beautiful courtesan in the Moonlit Land?

Even Suzume is no longer sure of her true identity. But she is determined to steal the heart of the Moon Prince and exact revenge on her stepfather for the death of her family. And nothing will stop her. Not even her love for fellow shadow weaver Otieno, the one man who can see through her illusions.

Set in a fairy-tale version of ancient Japan, Shadows on the Moon shakes up the Cinderella story with its brave, resourceful, and passionate heroine.

captivating and beautiful

I couldn't stop listening to this beautiful and tragic story. Seeing how much pain and suffering this poor little girl had to go thought because of her mother and stepfather enraged me. But otieno brought tears to my eyes with his love for her. It puts you through ups and downs but you just want to stay their with the character's.

Good but the cutting is disturbing.

I liked the story and the the idea of the shadow magic, it was fascinating. However, I found the idea of the young girl cutting, burning and harming herself very disturbing. For this reason I can not recommend this book. She repeatedly does this throughout the story and I don’t find this a healthy behavior.

Breathtaking

A brilliant read. As always, Zoe Marriott's book are unique and enrapturing. It makes the reader feel as the character feels. You are invested in her struggles with real world problems. It blends cultures and stories seemlessly with just enough of the original, but not too much.
