About this listen

The fleet fights on...deeper. Farther into the black unknown of space. There is no other path, no way for the lost to go save forward.

Admiral Terrance Compton's fleet is cut off from Earth, deep in the heart of the enemy First Imperium. A third of his people have died in the year his force has been fleeing from its enemies, but he is as determined as ever to find a new home for his people, a way to save his war-torn fleet. His people are running low on everything - food, ammunition, fuel - and the brutal enemy is in relentless pursuit, marshaling all its vast resources to track down and destroy the human refugees. Compton must find a way to replenish his dwindling stores while avoiding the massive enemy forces hunting his fleet from system to system.

Compton seeks an escape, a refuge for his exhausted spacers from the relentless pursuit of their enemies. But they are about to find far more than that as they discover the truth of the distant past and a glimpse of a new future that lies before them. What they learn will shake all they believe...and force them to reconsider who they are. And what victory would look like. The fight has just begun...and the stakes are even higher than any of them had imagined.

Too many phrase repeats

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Can't wait for third book!

Loved this book, better then the first in my opinion. Lots of space battles, and gets further into the imperiums technology and history. For anyone who rated this 2 stars or less you should go choke yourself, let's see you write a book! in fact, the whole history of the imperium makes more sense to me on the history of humans, then science can explain now!

A Gem in Disguise

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Abolutely! I purchased book 1 on sale through audible, and though it had good reviews, I have been disappointed before. It did take me about 15-20 minutes to get hooked, but once hooked, I am only disappointed I have to await book three....hopefully only another week according to the author.

What did you like best about this story?

Its good solid hard military science fiction with an interesting twist on the origins of humanity.

What about Jay Snyder’s performance did you like?

It grew on me. At first, in book 1, I wasn't sure I'd like it, but once the characters and story line filtered in, his reading became very enjoyable.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Too many to pick just one.

Any additional comments?

Its a very good and exciting story line. I can't wait to find out what happens next.

Good story

I like the story, I enjoy the performance, although if I could get paid for counting the number of times I heard the line "going right down their throats" from various, unconnected characters, I'd probably be rich!

Just seems like a rookie mistake from a good writer.

Great Series

I have read or listened to quiet a few Jay Allen books and you got to hand it to the guy he can write damn Good books. This series is just as good as his others. Amazing characters, great action, and the story never bogs down. If your into Si-Fi books this is a great series.

Starts slow but gets great!

First it starts slow and I was about to end the book halfway through. But then it gets really good and the futures store is revealed. Now I can’t wait to read the rest.

The further they go, the more answers they find

Shadow of the Gods is Jay Allan's 2nd installment of the Crimson Worlds Refugee series. The armada, still cut off form Earth, continues to move deeper into First Imperium space and begin to find evidence of old battles that occurred on settled planets. An attempt to grow food, allows for exploration of alien ruins which reveals some answers to what happened to the First Imperium, the origin of the Regent, and even humanity's existence. With new found resolve, along with some epic battles, the slowly dwindling force finally limps off for some bit of respite.

The sci-fi elements remain largely in the realm of physics with FTL capability, energy weapons, and military robots. DNA tinkering plays prominently for why everything is the way it is. Also unfolding is a pure, diabolically evil artificial intelligence that is not only unlikely to stop, but still is intent on Earth's eventual destruction. The science geek and Mark Harman, both play pivotal roles.

The narration is well done with an excellent range of voices of both genders.

Repetitive gets bogged down

It's a good premise for the story. The narrator is very good. The story gets so repetitive - same thing over and over. You could listen to Chapter 1 & 2 then skip to 25 then the epilogue and you'd completely understand the entire book.

I hesitate to recommend this to anyone. Seems like the author was looking for a way to up the word count and settled on just repeating the same thing over and over and over.
