About this listen

The gripping sequel to the Locus award-winning science-fiction adventure, Revenger, tells a story of obsession and betrayal as two sisters hunt for the greatest treasure in the universe.

Adrana and Fura Ness have finally been reunited, but both have changed beyond recognition. Once desperate for adventure, now, Adrana is haunted by her enslavement on the feared pirate Bosa Sennen's ship. And rumors of Bosa Sennen's hidden cache of treasure have ensnared her sister, Fura, into single-minded obsession.

Neither is safe; because the galaxy wants Bosa Sennen dead, and they don't care if she's already been killed. They'll happily take whoever is flying her ship.

Shadow Captain is a desperate story of cursed ships, vengeful corporations, and alien artifacts, of daring escapes and wealth beyond imagining...and of betrayal.

Critic reviews

"This wonderfully complicated, fascinating space opera carries on the adventures of teen sisters Adrana and Arafura Ness, who find themselves over their heads in deep space intrigue... [A] marvelous mix of character study and space adventure."—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Shadow Captain does what a great sequel should do: it builds upon, rather than replicates, the earlier work while escalating the drama and upping the stakes. ... The worlds'-shattering conclusion has us very much looking forward to our next voyage with the Ness sisters."—B&N Sci-Fi and Fantasy Blog

"The sequel to last year's space heist story, Revenger, is an equally-gripping story about two sisters, Adrana and Fura Ness, on the hunt for the greatest treasure in the universe."—Kirkus

Confused

It has been a while since I read the first book and I could not remember the story. This caused me some confusion. Great idea though

Another great story from the Master!

Clare isn't whispering near as much in this one, thankfully!

I love that the main character / narrator switched from Arafura to Adrana. Not for any reason but to view the former's actions in this story from the outside. I think this was a great choice of Mr Reynolds.

The story of the Ness sisters hits on all fronts. We have us versus them, Prozer playing solo, and an amazing character in Mr Glimery. The sucking of saliva in his parts could not have been described in the books, so I'm lead to believe the voice actress and Alastair/ production team had a say in how those parts were vocalized. Great job!

Overall, the story was great, and I really look forward to another one with the crew of the Night Jammer, Revenger.

Slurping nearly made me puke in the grocery store.

Loved the story.
The slurping nearly made me puke in the grocery store.
If I hadn't already bought the third book, I would have given up.

Sound quality issues persist

Love the story and reader, but it was not always easy to hear. Volume seemed to be hushed at times.

Meh sequel to a fantastic book

Revenger is one of my favorite scifi books, and a brilliant setting.
So that the bulk of this story is a drudging tale set in a boring location is... disheartening. Worth reading (or hearing) if only to get the additional setting and greater narrative details.
The narrator made the choice to make a bizarre slurping noise that wasn't present in the book, on one of the most talkative characters in the book. it's agonizing and annoying and pointless. It's like the first episode of Rick and Morty where Rick belches waaaaay too much.
Let's hope the third book is better!

The use of 1800th century English maritime idiums

Cleaver chsngevof main character to the other sister. Het voice was cleaver although she spent a lot of time ruminating on morale delemas

Still needs vol engineering, Slurping isn't so bad

They really need to remaster the audio. It's not nearly as bad as the first book, but it still sucks to turn the volume all the way up and not be able to easily hear the characters. Also, the slurping really isn't that bad and the character who does it really doesn't have many lines. It's weird but easy enough to get through.
