About this listen

In this unique book, Peter Vronsky documents the psychological, investigative, and cultural aspects of serial murder, beginning with its first recorded instance in ancient Rome, through 15th-century France, up to such notorious contemporary cases as cannibal/necrophile Ed Kemper, Henry Lee Lucas, Ted Bundy, and the emergence of what he classifies as "the serial rampage killer" such as Andrew Cunanan.

Exhaustively researched, with transcripts of interviews with killers and featuring up-to-date information on the apprehension and conviction of the Green River Killer and the Beltway Snipers, Vronsky's one-of-a-kind book covers every conceivable aspect of an endlessly riveting true-crime phenomenon.

Interesting, if gory

There were points while reading this book when I wondered if I should stop. It was well written, and it was very interesting, but it was extremely dark and gory, even to someone like me who enjoys dark, gory things.

Also, that last chapter on surviving a serial killer? It’s pretty terrible. Especially the last page or two. Skip this part, and you will enjoy the book more.

Interesting book with good narration

I found this book well researched with professional audio and good narration...it did not sound like a seventh grader reading his book report. If you've listened to other audiobooks in this genre and appreciate the meaning in what I've just said, you may find it satisfying to listen and contrast for yourself this book with some others you may have had the misfortune to purchase.

very informative

I was a fan of how there were examples for every type of killer, quite a fan.

Fascinating

Well written and well narrated. A wonderfully informative flow through the minds of those who think so differently. Helps to find a place for what is so difficult to comprehend. Interesting that the inflictions are not better recognized and exposed as brain disorders. Possibly the inability to form meaningful relationships prevents identification . Information in the final chapter ....to prepare, be aware and protected with knowledge, technique and devices should be better discussed in the general population. Laura J Iskenderian

Mixed

Throughout this book I vacillated between three stars and four stars. Much of it is dry statistics which would be extremely valuable in a textbook but which makes an audible listen boring and tedious. I was anticipating more of a discussion about what went through the mind of a serial killer. there is that , but it is presented in more of a detached objective way rather than weaving a story. Nevertheless, if you're interested in this topic I believe this book is well worth a listen.

insightful

not just a splatter house and gore porn cash grab, this book is a keen (albeit extremely graphic) look into the actual behavioral science behind paraphilia and murder. there is a lot to learn and it is presented in a digestible way. despite it's length I found myself continuously captivated.

Things you thought you knew

The content was very well written and narrated. Serial killer and true crime aficionados will definitely want to put this on the list of books to consume.

It’s technical and gets into the weeds. Some of the info may be too much for those who are not familiar or really into researching true crime, but it’s insightful and definitely worth listening to. I appreciated the narration as he just read in his normal voice which has a nice tone and didn’t pretend to be someone else. That annoys the crap out of me and listening to it ruins the experience entirely. This one is well done.

book girl

Very interesting book. Well narrated. The instructions for how to defuse a serial killer/rapist depending on his "type" was truly scary. It seems once they have you, you are doomed. Well researched and thought provoking.
