Accents were a problem

Would you consider the audio edition of September to be better than the print version?

I have never read the print version, but I had listened to an earlier audio version on cassette tapes. The narration of the earlier audiobook was much better.

What other book might you compare September to and why?

All of the Pilcher books are great. They are favorites we listen to while traveling.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jilly Bond?

Donada Peters would have been a better choice. Better accents, better pace.

If you could rename September, what would you call it?

September pretty much says it.

Any additional comments?

The narrator of this book was great with standard British accents. When she did men, older Scottish women, and children, her voice was harsh and unpleasant.

A breath of Scotland in a lovely story

This author never disappoints, but is a master crafter of character, setting, and story. The weave of it allowing you time to get to know the people & the place, to care, to relate & to understand their humanness.

I loved the story and will be seeking out others.

Good story, inferior narrator

I enjoy Rosamunde Pilcher’s stories, but don’t understand why such a mediocre narrator (Jilly Bond) was chosen to read her books. I suffered through, but a better narrator makes a good story great. They missed an opportunity here.

The magic of Rosamunde’s words!

Of course I love the characters, the storyline, the plot and all the places and imagery in Rosamunde Pilcher’s books. And this book also reminded me of how I love the lilting music of her use of words. Her magical use of the English language makes me burst out laughing with pleasure and feel deeply the joys and pain of her characters.

Now and Always

I've read this book and The Shell Seekers many times and each and every time I become so wrapped up in the story that I'm weeping at the end. Every. Time.

Good Story - Dreadful Narration!

I love Rosamunde Pilcher and the stories she wrote are wonderful. Her character development is second to none. The narration was barely tolerable. Ms. Bond's artificially dramatic reading was most distracting. I considered stopping the book several times before the end of the book. I might still do that. I think I need to save the story, and read the book myself.

Classical Pilcher

So filled with the love of family and the joy of community. Scotland is front and center due to the performance of characters in their individual brogues, timbres and voices. Well performed.
This is the unabridged book, and there were a few scattered parts in need of light editing for detail that went off track. That said, the scrumptious detail makes it the wonderful and engaging story it is.

Beautifully Scottish

I listen to the story periodically because I love the plot and I love the performance of Jilly Bond. It is one of my favorites.

Still a Great Book

Any additional comments?

September is one of my all-time favorite Rosamunde Pilcher books. I started listening to audio books in the 1990s and Rosemunde Pilcher was one of my favorite authors. Listening to this story again 20 years later, I find that the book has not become dated and it it was just as enjoyable the second time around (with one small exception).

The characters are well developed and you feel as if they are people you have always known and have always liked in spite of their weaknesses. The descriptions of the landscape of Scotland and the various homes of the many characters made me feel as if I were there seeing them for myself.

When listening to an audio book that has many characters, such as September, I sometimes make a written list of the characters as a reference to keep me from becoming confused about who is in the current scene. But there is no need with this one---or any of Ms. Pilcher's books for that matter. She does such a fine job of slowly introducing and developing each character that there is no need to make a list. Each character is fully developed, memorable and easy to recall in every scene throughout the book.

Beautifully written, enjoyable to ready, and ever entertaining, September is a book I will revisit again and again.

My one dissatisfaction with this audio version of September was the reader. After listening to the first recorded version I had a certain expectation of excellence from the reader and this version definitely does not measure up. The voices the reader uses for the older women and the young boy became so high pitched and somewhat "schreechy," that in the beginning I almost gave up and went looking for the original version that had been recorded on cassette tapes. But I was so eager to hear this story again that I stayed with it and after a while I stopped cringing when I heard those voices and overlooked this weakness.

All things considered, I still highly recommend this book!
