Publisher's summary

This is the astonishing true story of three teenage Dutch girls, Hannie Schaft and sisters Truus and Freddie Oversteegen, that has inspired many throughout the world. When Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands in World War II, these girls took up arms against the enemy by seducing high-ranking Nazi officers, luring them into the woods and killing them. They provided Jewish children with safe houses and gathered vital intelligence for the resistance. They did what they did "because it had to be done". Above all, they tried to remain human in inhuman circumstances. Hannie Schaft was executed by the Nazis three weeks before the end of the war and became the icon of female Dutch resistance. Truus and Freddie Oversteegen survived the war, but were forever haunted by the demons of their past.

A new insight

I originally heard about these women from a podcast I was listening to. The podcast provided good information but I wanted to know even more. The book didn’t disappoint. It was a different take on that time in Europe.

This Story Needs a Movie

The history buff that I am has alway been impressed the courage and accomplishments of women in war throughout history. Nothing comes close to this because of the very young ages these girls were I wish a move were made to get this story out to the masses. This was a great listen narration was on point and the story was 5 star to begin with. I throughly enjoyed learning about these 3 freedom fighters.

Well told… Well written… Well documented

I am a history buff and teacher. I’m also a woman…and I lived in Austria during college. Stories…or rather, histories, fascinate me not only for the knowledge content, but also to learn more about the human experience. This is a fabulous recollection of what some women were not only willing but able to do in an effort to save the world from the Nazis and the fascists. We should have more movies and books about these real life heros!

Story about bravery!

I grew up in Holland and remember the stories my parents told me about WW2. I recognized the town and streets that were mentioned in this book. A story about incredible bravery and courage! For me personally this would have been a better read with a book versus audible. I couldn't help getting a bit annoyed by the narrator trying her hardest to pronounce the dutch names of people involved and the streets of Haarlem.

Amazing story

This is just a wonderful history. I knew nothing about these events before I picked this up, and over and over I wondered "Why isn't this a movie?!" Nicely written, well researched -- just read this book.

Interesting story, too but short

This is an interesting story about heroines in occupied Netherlands. It is a short book and therefore missing details that might be interesting.

The narrator is ok, however due to her not speaking Dutch she pronouns the Dutch words in an awkward manner which is a shame.
