About this listen

The effects of spiritual practices are now being investigated scientifically as never before, and many studies have shown that religious and spiritual practices generally make people happier and healthier. In this pioneering book, Rupert Sheldrake shows how science helps validate seven practices on which many religions are built, and which are part of our common human heritage: meditation, gratitude, connecting with nature, relating to plants, rituals, singing and chanting, and pilgrimage and holy places.

Sheldrake summarizes the latest scientific research on what happens when we take part in these practices, and suggests ways that listeners can explore these fields for themselves. For those who are religious, Science and Spiritual Practices will illuminate the evolutionary origins of their own traditions and give a new appreciation of their power. For the nonreligious, this audiobook will show how the core practices of spirituality are accessible to all.

This is an audiobook for anyone who suspects that in the drive toward radical secularism, something valuable has been left behind. Rupert Sheldrake compellingly argues that by opening ourselves to the spiritual dimension, we may find the strength to live more fulfilling lives.

Beautiful in its simple descriptions and plain text.

You would think the ambiguous nature of the metaphysical and mankind’s journey through it wouldn’t be so simple to explain but Sheldrake’s masterful take makes it seem so easy.
Thank you.

Important invitation to spirituality

I very much enjoyed many parts of this book, particularly the personal stories of Prof. Sheldrake. I would maybe give the story a higher rating if all of the material were new to me. Many will find it revelational.

Beautiful

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It’s easily understood and Rupert is a great narrator. His voice is soothing and clear. He gives ample pauses between sentences to allow the brain to interpret information.

As to the book itself, I thought it was a beautiful book respectful of the benefits of maintaining healthy religious and spiritual practices. I personally feel, more than ever, humanity needs to find a balance between science and spirituality and give up extreme thinking. I feel this books honors that need and is a beginning to spiritual practice regardless of your religion or lack thereof. The author is respectful of the myriad of religious practices around the world and does them justice. Thank you. This was a wonderfully healing book for myself at least. Many blessings

A wealth of information

This book is incredibly timely,. It really helps you to understand the origins and importance of spiritual practices. People who are science-based will be able to gain a new appreciation and people who are more spiritual or religious can Gain a deeper appreciation into the science behind their practices. For me, it has reignited a desire to become more regular in many of my spiritual practices. The book helps you to understand the benefits of spiritual practices and this has deepened my commitment! I love the fact that Rupert Sheldrake actually narrated the book it made it even more special!
I am giving it to a number of my friends. In this world that is so chaotic and disenchanted I think it is a very important book to help people to see the magic, meaning and wisdom of our pasts And how we can use it to transform ourselves now.

excellent for all types of people

helps one to integrate knowledge of science with the intuitive, built in nature we received from God - at some point - either beginning of evolution or the special creation of man - either way god is responsible for our mind - soul and through it connects us to him, nature and others. we were meant to live a different life than our western world does - prior to Rome, all of history lived an "eastern" lifestyle, integrating the secular and sacred. the west divorces the two and is poorer for it. listen to a chapter before bed and fall asleep meditating on (concentration, not emptying) and you'll love this as much as I did. I especially appreciated his presenting each view accurately before offering a new perspective. eg atheist christian Muslim etc

Just a correction.

The world’s first national park was Yellowstone, not Yosemite. Yellowstone was set aside for “for the benefit and enjoyment of the people." In 1872
