About this listen

Steel Magnolias meets The Help in this Southern debut novel sparkling with humor, heart, and feminine wisdom.

Twelve-year-old CeeCee Honeycutt is in trouble. For years, she has been the caretaker of her psychotic mother, Camille-the tiara-toting, lipstick-smeared laughingstock of an entire town-a woman trapped in her long-ago moment of glory as the 1951 Vidalia Onion Queen. But when Camille is hit by a truck and killed, CeeCee is left to fend for herself. To the rescue comes her previously unknown great-aunt, Tootie Caldwell.

In her vintage Packard convertible, Tootie whisks CeeCee away to Savannah's perfumed world of prosperity and Southern eccentricity, a world that seems to be run entirely by women. From the exotic Miz Thelma Rae Goodpepper, who bathes in her backyard bathtub and uses garden slugs as her secret weapons, to Tootie's all-knowing housekeeper, Oletta Jones, to Violene Hobbs, who entertains a local police officer in her canary-yellow peignoir, the women of Gaston Street keep CeeCee entertained and enthralled for an entire summer.

Laugh-out-loud funny and deeply touching, Beth Hoffman's sparkling debut is, as Kristin Hannah says, "packed full of Southern charm, strong women, wacky humor, and good old-fashioned heart." It is a novel that explores the indomitable strengths of female friendship and gives us the story of a young girl who loses one mother and finds many others.

Saving CeeCee Honeycutt

Loved this story! So eloquently written, but I have to agree with another reviewer that hearing it was even better-I felt a privilege, a fuller experience. The charming, eccentric, loving, troubled, and not so unbelievable characters were brought to life and lifesaving for a smart young girl in very trying circumstances. I thoroughly enjoyed this listen.

Great story

I really enjoyed this story. It is almost a two part adventure (before and after CeeCee was saved). Both parts are intersting and CeeCee is a great character. Her mother's situation is sad and her father is a loser - but CeeCee is wonderful. I loved all the characters in the "second part". It is well worth the purchase.

Saving Ceecee Honeycutt

A sweet book, appropriate for readers of all ages. The narrator did a very good job of representing the characters with various voices and accents.

I think I want to move to the South!

I love the narrator, she has a sweet warm inviting voice. The story is sweet to the core! Southern Sweet! I can feel the Southern charm ooze from the pages with its characters who are both funny, warm and salty.....A lovely story of loss, love and kindness something we need more of in the world.

For This Book Jenna Lamia Was the Perfect Narrator

Loved this! There have been tragic events in my life that left me completely ready for the elements of the story - that of a bright girl tumbled into a new, unsought life through a series of life events which were sad, and troubling, but unremarkable due to the frequency of these very events maybe in your life, or certainly the life of someone you know. That was a long sentence for a three sentence review of why I enjoyed Ceecee.

Wonderful

Not a complex story as the social issues could have been delved into much further, the story was light and nice, considering the heroine was a 12 year old girl.

Wonderful rich story

I love an engaging story with well developed and rich characters, and especially if the story and telling is family friendly. And this story has all of that. It is heart warming and well told, and the narration is wonderful! Each character is narrated in its own unique voice.

Sweet story of overcoming

First of all, Jenna Lamia had me totally convinced that this book was being read by a child! But her narration of ALL the characters was fantastic, and the adults felt like adults with her voicing of them. CeeCee, Aunt Tootie, Oletta, Thelma Goodpepper - all of these women came alive and I'll miss them terribly now that I've completed the book. I sorta want to move to Savannah!

The Pursuit of Heart Felt Joy

I just finished reading this charmer for the second time, several years after the first time. It was like eating a second serving of your favorite food. I adore this book for so many reasons. It is uplifting, portrays strong female power, and is beautifully written. It combines hope and tragedy, sadness and joy, the ridiculous and sublime. The audio is superb. I think I will wait a few more years and read it again!

Jenna Lamia is wonderful!

Her narration draws you deep into the story; in the midst of the characters' thoughts. If you enjoyed this book, listen to "The Help", where Jenna Lamia's talents shine once again!
