About this listen

In the perfect companion piece to his first book, Blake Snyder delivers even more insider information gleaned from a 20-year track record as one of Hollywood's most successful spec screenwriters. Designed for screenwriters, novelists, and movie fans, this book gives listeners key breakdowns of the 50 most instructional movies from the past 30 years. From M*A*S*H to Crash, Alien to Saw, and 10 to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Snyder reveals how screenwriters in the past tackled the same challenges faced by screenwriters today.

Solid Companion to the Original

The book is pitched as a stand alone, however, in my opinion you would get much less from it in this way, it is best taken as a companion to the original.

The deep dive of each genre with multiple examples in each was extremely helpful in understanding these ideas expressed in the original book.

Another great tool in the writers box

I love the Save a The Cat series. I have found them incredibly useful when developing and writing my projects.

I see films in a new way now as well.

Excellent Foundation

I enjoyed the step by step explanation of the process behind constructing a traditional screenplay.

Actionable and entertaining

A great foundation in the quest to build genre-aware screenwriting skills. Not as elaborate as John Truby's system, but easier to digest, and well-explored through analysis of films in all major Hollywood genres.

Another great resource

Having enjoyed the first installment, I figured I had screenwriting all figured out. A couple of years later with no produced work to my name, I figured I’d give this book a chance. Very glad that I did. Turns out most of my screenplays were somewhere in between two story types. Hearing this explained helped me to fix them up. Still waiting on that first deal but that’s all because of the strike, nothing to do with me 😉

Perfect Companion for Save the Cat

Excellent follow up to the original Save the Cat. Takes the ideas in that amazing “how to write a screenplay” bible and brings them to life with entertaining and educational examples of the structure of a screenplay. Surely Napoleon Dynamite is a structureless exception!?! Nope: As structured as any Hallmark Christmas movie! If you loved the original and really want to understand the craft, this is a must companion listen. Same great reader and tone. Great pick whether you dream of writing screenplays or just love movies and what makes them work.
