About this listen
Ever since he joined Omega Force, Captain Jason Burke has lived with the underlying fear that one day Earth would be discovered. His desire to keep Earth's existence and location a secret has driven him to extremes, and kept him far away from his homeworld for a long time. But now Jason's greatest fear is realized, and a fleet of alien ships has attacked his planet. Omega Force rushes to Earth's defense, but the ships are like none they've ever encountered, and employ weapons they have no defense for. Will their lone gunship be able to slug it out with the unknown fleet holding the planet hostage? Or will this be a one-way trip for the crew of the Phoenix?

Aliens exist...and, as it turns out, most of them aren’t that friendly. Jacob Brown wasn’t even born yet the first time they attacked Earth. He was only 14 the second time it happened. When Earth finally came together and fielded its first spaceborne military, Jacob didn’t hesitate to volunteer. Serving aboard a mighty starship, he’d be able to defend his planet - and his family - when, inevitably, they came again.

Story
In the 25th century, humans have conquered space. The advent of faster-than-light travel has opened up hundreds of habitable planets for colonization, and humans have exploited the virtually limitless space and resources for hundreds of years with impunity. So complacent have they become with the overabundance that armed conflict is a thing of the past, and their machines of war are obsolete and decrepit. What would happen if they were suddenly threatened by a terrifying new enemy?

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Well done - a very fun adventure thus far.
What made the experience of listening to Savage Homecoming the most enjoyable?
Hearing the dialogue between all the characters. Dry humor - reminds me of how I talk to my friends.
What other book might you compare Savage Homecoming to and why?
The Riyria Chronicles series, Author: Michael J. Sullivan - the banter and character interactions are just as entertaining.
Have you listened to any of Paul Heitsch’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Paul seems to be hitting his stride with the characterizations - they come alive.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Not really, but the story does 'move' along quite nicely. Paced very well with no slow spots.
Any additional comments?
Another commenter mentioned how they thought the 'relationship' portion of the story was a distraction. It's not - I actually found myself thinking that it was nice to see, since things like that are often ignored or glossed over in stories like this. It was done very well and actually added to the plot dynamics. I've really grown fond of this story and this 3rd book does a great job of setting the stage for the next phase of this series. Well done - a very fun adventure thus far. I just bought the next book.

Another excellent story by a great author. Be careful if you start listening as you may not be able to stop.
At the end of this book the author has an epilogue of the next book. I would think that it would be book 4, but there is no book 4 in this series. None of the subsequent write ups refer to this epilogue, so what happened to this next book in the series? I plan to listen to the rest of this series so maybe I will yet find an answer.

Good performance
Adding a new female character was unnecessary and an irritant. Good story otherwise and fantastic performance.

The stories are incredible
Just when I think I know what's next, yhe author adds some nuisances I didn't expect. The books are so very enjoyable.

Bummer!
I did not like this book! Jason, the leader, often throws temper tantrums, acts like a dictator to his crew, fails to listen to their advice, almost gets everyone killed, and to top it off, the book becomes a romance novel!

Top Notch
What do you do when you're accidentally kidnapped from planet earth in a spaceship? Escape your captor, rescue people in trouble, and kick some ass along the way?
Yes, please!
This is one of my favorite science fiction series of all time. It's fun, witty, ridiculous, and the characters are absolutely fantastic.
Paul Heitsch delivers time and again in each book of this series. He is able to impart a distinct characteristic and tone of voice for each of the many different types of characters and peoples.
I sincerely hope to see many more books in this series for years to come.
**Full disclosure: I received a review copy of this book.**

Getting better
Needs to remove anything sappy related to the relationship with Taran. Otherwise it is good story that is well narrated. Im into this series pretty well and hope he sticks to the whole space opera/pirate renegade/privateer track.
