Are you parenting or are you parenting well?

Raising kids today is more challenging than it has ever been. Technology, social media, and the ever-shifting standards of what is right and wrong can make parenting in modern-day culture difficult to navigate. If we want to win the battle as parents, we need to have the desire to truly parent well. If we want to parent well, we must resolve to make parenting more important than almost anything else and give it the effort and attention that’s required. With all the outside influences that kids are facing every single day, parenting well requires a heightened sense of commitment and discernment, as well as a willingness to lead by example. Most parents want to do the best job they can, and with much focus and effort can succeed in this very noble desire and responsibility.

In Salt, Light, and Kids, Steve Hines helps parents train up their children to become the salt of the earth and the light of the world and to hear God’s voice above all the competing voices vying for their attention.

"Whether you’re expecting your first child or in the frontlines of the teen years, you will discover Salt, Light, & Kids to be an invaluable resource for your parenting journey." (Chris Hodges, New York Times best-selling author and Senior Pastor of Church of the Highlands in Birmingham, Alabama)

Practical parenting - wise tips and advice

"Salt, Light & Kids" by Steve Hines is an incredibly insightful book for parents like me navigating the challenges of parenting in the age of social media. It addresses the ups and downs kids face, from changing hormones to school, peer pressure, and dating. Drawing from his own experiences, Steve breaks down parenting techniques and strategies in an accessible manner, emphasizing the significance of discipline and consistency. He shares the challenges he and his wife faced while implementing these principles with their own children.

As a follower of Christ, one verse that has always stuck out to me is Proverbs 22:6 NLT, "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." This book helps make it a tangible guide through Steve's narrative. It not only imparts practical tips on raising children with strong values but also reflects on the challenges he and his wife encountered, including pushback from their kids. Despite these obstacles, Steve illustrates how, with dedication, God's grace, and guidance, both of their children grew into the young adults they had hoped for. "Salt, Light & Kids" is a great resource, offering hope and actionable advice for parents striving to raise their kids in today's world.

Phenomenal parenting book with a rock-solid moral core

Parenting in the modern era is a uniquely daunting prospect. This book doesn’t oversimplify or sugar-coat those challenges. It lays down a solid moral foundation upon which to build a healthy and well-adjusted family… provided you’re willing to work for it!

The author, Steve Hines, doesn’t elevate himself as a perfect example of parenting. He’s not a snake oil salesman. He levels with the reader, emphasizing the need for any parent (himself included) to know how to learn and adapt to the countless curveballs life will throw. To that end, he offers a blueprint for a strong moral framework crafted from scripture, and from his own honest experiences as a parent. A framework that anyone can refer to in times of conflict and confusion, even those who aren’t of the Christian faith.

Steve distills the most important lessons he’s learned over decades of parenting and explains what worked, what didn’t, and why. And with proud endorsements from his grown-up son and daughter, his insights actually ring true. Present and future parents, give it a read/listen! You’ll be glad you did :)

The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth

First let me say that Steve has been one of my closest friends for over 40 years. I knew that Max and Madeline both turned out to be well adjusted, God fearing adults, but I still didn’t know what to expect when I learned that Steve was writing a book. Well… I know now that The Holy Spirit definitely inspired Steve to write this. It is honest, insightful, convicting, and sometimes painful, but in a good way. I know that the stories Steve tells are true because I heard most, if not all, of them first hand when they were happening. The beautiful part of this book, in my opinion, is that unlike many parenting books, Steve doesn’t claim to have all the answers. But he knows, and wants the reader to know, that God does have the answers. If you take nothing else from this, the simple fact that prayer should accompany every parenting decision is the best advice he could give. The modern world presents many, many challenges that parents of previous generations couldn’t have imagined, but using the Bible as a guidebook, was, is, and always will be the best approach. I highly recommend this book.
