Story
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Rick's recent appearance on Ben Fogle's New Lives in the Wild chronicled his budget lifestyle and adventures aboard Calypso, and introduced the idea of budget sailing to a whole new audience - an audience who may have never considered the possibility that such a dream could be made a reality, on such a small amount of money. This book is for them and for any experienced sailors who want to cast off the yoke of consumerist yachting and get back to what really matters at sea.

Story
Imagine spending 24 hours a day with your spouse in 31 not-so-square feet for years, crossing the Pacific Ocean on two gallons of fuel, and tossing spaghetti marinara around your living room then cleaning it up while bouncing like ice in a martini shaker. Tightwads on the Loose tells the story of Wendy and Garth, lured to sea by the promise of adventure. They buy a 31-foot boat that fits their budget better than it fits Garth's large frame and set sail on an open-ended voyage, never imagining they'd be gone seven years or cover 34,000 miles at the pace of a fast walk.

To anyone interested in small-boat cruising and voyaging, the names Lin and Larry Pardey need no introduction. As world-girdling sailors who roamed the planet on a pair of small, engineless boats that they built themselves, the Pardeys established their hard-earned reputations by eloquently (and sometimes controversially) telling their stories through a series of best-selling books and manuals, and countless seminars and boat shows.

Story
Veteran sailor and writer Christian Williams invites us along once again on a 5,000-mile voyage of discovery around the North Pacific. Equipped with a new boat, a well-stocked toolbox, and the entire history of philosophic thought, he takes us as crew through squalls and calms deep into a laboratory of the universe that exists only out of sight of land. Funny, erudite, and at times deeply personal, Philosophy of Sailing explores who we are and how encounters with the unknown can be a path to revelation and joy.

What they don't see from their resort hotels are the hundreds of out-of-the-way, uninhabited islands sprinkled along the West Indies, from Florida to South America. This alluring archipelago, strung with beaches accessible only by boat but spaced temptingly close together, led Mississippi adventurer Scott B. Williams to embark upon an open-ended quest to see how far south he could go in a 17-foot sea kayak.

It takes alot to write about the experience in life. Living out your dream has continued to give me the courage to want to fulfill mine. I even bought the paperback just for the reference of the way some things were talked about. Thanks for the great story.

Another great adventure
I recently started listening to audio books and love it. I am not much for reading so this is my next best replacement.
I really enjoyed the story, start to finish. The author laid out the foundation for the story, set us Sailing with her and kept me coming back with her humor, details. descriptive nature.
All and all and good book. I will listen to it again because am sure I missed a lot of details when I was mapping their trip.
Very nice job.

How a South Pacific loop from Seattle can be made uninteresting
There are so many fascinating, informative, humble accounts of long voyages in the Pacific by young or older crews. This book is not one of them. A poorly written juxtaposition of mundane anecdotes brings the reader through this voyage, with a writer not even trying to do some research to use the right terms. When not mundane, anecdotes are good stories about what to not do. Like killing a tuna with a 357 magnum or collecting sea shells with the animal still inside and complaining about the smell. The book could have been about sharing emotions, bringing the reader along. But no. There are more emotions in a shopping list. I did like the narration though, same narrator as for Lin Pardey’s books, that I highly recommend instead of this one.
