Acerca de esta escucha

The modern conservative intellectual movement began in 1953 with Russell Kirk’s groundbreaking book The Conservative Mind. Four years later, he published a pithy, wry, philosophical summary of what conservatism really means. Originally titled The Intelligent Woman's Guide to Conservatism, this little book was essentially a popular version of The Conservative Mind.

Now, a century after its author’s birth, this neglected gem has been recovered. It remains what Kirk intended it to be: an accessible introduction to conservative ideas, especially for the young. With a new title and an introduction by the eminent intellectual historian Wilfred M. McClay, Russell Kirk’s Concise Guide to Conservatism arrives with uncanny timing. The movement that Kirk defined in 1953 is today so contested and fragmented that no one seems able to say with confidence what conservatism means.

This book, as fresh and prophetic as the day it was published 60 years ago, is a reminder that no one can match Russell Kirk in engaging people’s minds and imaginations - an indispensable task in reviving our civilization.

If only we had taught our children these principles. For generations these ideas were neglected, even shunned, especially in schools and universities, and so we are closer to slavery and tyranny than ever. Let’s hope for a remnant who will rise and take up the “Burke to Kirk” methods of ensuring human dignity and liberty.

Prophetic

Well laid out and to the point. A true classic. If only we would practice it.

Great Articulation of True Conservatism

For perhaps high school or college students, or people short on time, this is a solid abridgement of the much longer original.

Good distillation of the original

To understand conservatism and not just agree with the news channels you like. 👍🏾

Great for an awakening conservative

Prophetic. It's happening right now even though it was written 60 years ago . Conservatism is good old fashioned common sense.

Short but filled with great information.

What we celebrate, we condone.

The term "conservative" will mean one thing depending on when you are. A modern conservative is not the same as an 18th century conservative, despite what Kirk might have you believe.

It is true that an American conservative might best be viewed as someone standing up for traditional order, family, society, values, religion that built western civilization. But what today exactly are American conservatives? What are they conserving? If they seek to protect the status quo, or conserve it, they are conserving a gargantuan welfare/warfare state. They are conserving Medicaid and Medicare and Social Security. They are conserving a vast military that intrudes in one country after another.

American conservatives worship the Constitution. But as Lysander Spooner famously said:

"But whether the Constitution really be one thing, or another, this much is certain - that it has either authorized such a government as we have had, or has been powerless to prevent it. In either case, it is unfit to exist."

Do modern conservatives even have any idea what the federal republic once was? Why do they defend a system that produced Abraham Lincoln and his war to prevent southern secession? Why do they brag about a governmental structure that gave rise to FDR and his alphabet soup of tyrannical government programs? Why do they revere a general government that involves itself in all manner of life...most of which is not authorized by that Constitution.

It is easy in hindsight to scoff at the ridiculous claims of this book...that the American system produced such great freedom. It was written in the late fifties, before the massive surveillance and police state, before the PATRIOT ACT. Before covid tyranny. But even still...Kirk had seen Lincoln, and Woodrow Wilson, and Teddy Roosevelt, and FDR. He had seen tyranny from the presidency, and a drift away from freedom and toward more centralized control.

This book is a decent explanation of what conservatism is...the only problem is that is has been worthless at protecting freedom. We live in a fascist, regulated global empire...and conservative thought and action has either aided it, or been powerless to stop it. Kirk takes a shot at anarchists as undermining society. This is nonsense. The anarchist is no threat, as he only denies that he has a master. He does not seek to destroy voluntary cooperation, or order, or societal cohesion. He only denies the authority of other men to dictate what he must do...even if it is listed on a piece of paper he never agreed to. Conservatives would be wise to realize the anarchists are not the threat to order, or freedom, or stability. Instead, it is the State, and those who apologize and continue to empower it, like modern conservatives, who are the problem. The phony conservative talking heads like Hannity and Mark Levin prevent freedom lovers from waking up and realizing the system is a scam, and the only thing being conserved is the control grid they live under.

Conservatives are defined by what they condone
