About this listen

Journey with Olympian Ryan Hall as he reflects on the joys and trials of the running life and, along the way, shows you how his faith has helped him win in his workouts, races, and overall mindset.

Ryan Hall is an Olympic athlete and American record holder in the half marathon (59:43). But as a kid, Ryan hated running. He wanted nothing to do with the sport until one day, he felt compelled to run the 15 miles around his neighborhood lake. He was hooked.

Starting that day, Ryan felt a God-given purpose in running. He knew he could, and would, race with the best runners in the world and that his talent was a gift to serve others. These two truths launched Ryan's 20-year athletic career and guided him through epic failures and exceptional breakthroughs to competing at the highest level.

Now a coach, speaker, and nonprofit partner, Ryan shares the powerful faith behind his athletic achievements and the lessons he learned that helped him push past limits, make space for relationships that enrich life on and off the running trails, and cultivate a positive mindset.

Lessons such as:

  • Learning how to focus on your purpose and say no to distractions
  • Select and strive for the right goals - goals for the heart and the body
  • How to deal with defeat and disappointment
  • How to endure immense pain and build resilience
  • Running as if you've already won

Ryan's story is one of encouragement and inspiration for listeners of any age and level of running ability - or none at all. It's a story that shows that you, too, can change your outlook, see God's hand in your life, and run the race that really matters.

Insightful yet Confusing

As a fan of Ryan Hall, this was a must-read. He has great insights from his faith and running background that were encouraging and helpful, personally and as a runner, myself. However, the book is organized by theme, not chronology, which made certain points in the book frustrating. Often, a story would be told, leading to a climax, but, instead, the story would jump to a related theme, 8 years in the past, but did not really complete the story being told. However, despite those unwelcome interruptions, I enjoyed the book and encourage anyone who is a runner or wants to go to the next level in their life to read it.

Real life application

The story told in each chapter show how one important word can define our actions and sum it up. Great listen, even for non-runners.

A great man that deals in humble truth

This man is so underrated for the great things he's done with his life. Many are not aware he holds the American record in the marathon. He is such a humble man and gives the credit to his success to God. You can learn a lot about about life through this wonderful story.

My first Marathon

I’m training for my first marathon and this was the kind of book I needed to hear! I keep hearing “your body type isn’t meant to be a long distance runner. You’re training for a marathon? You should focus on 5-10k’s. I’m 5’ 11” and 175 lbs. Been focusing on what my mind is prepped for, not my body. Thanks Ryan

One of the best books.

I bought the audio book and I absolutely loved this book. It’s such a blessing to hear a story about this young mans life being a elite athlete and he’s given his life to the Lord. I’m so inspired by Ryan’s story I’m sighing up for my first half marathon. Thank you Ryan for your faith and inspiration. God bless you and your family.
