Daniel Defoe nacque a Londra nel 1660 quando il colonialismo britannico era in piena espansione, un contesto storico che ispirò il suo romanzo più famoso, Robinson Crusoe, basato su eventi realmente accaduti, e rese popolare il genere del romanzo d'avventura. Oltre ad essere uno scrittore, Defoe fu anche un giornalista e un panflettista. Morì nel 1731.
