About this listen

Because rivers and lakes are commonly turbid and murky, many creatures that live there are invisible to traditional wildlife film-makers. So although many people are familiar with the inhabitants of tropical reefs, and even the deep oceanic trenches, it is the water right under our noses that we know least about. And yet these creatures at the top of the freshwater food chain are every bit as spectacular—and dangerous—as those that prowl the oceans.

Man-eating catfish in the Himalayas, wandering bullsharks in the rivers of Australia, man-sized super-piranhas that snack on the dangling genitals of swimmers in the Congo: these are only a few of the freshwater leviathans Jeremy Wade encounters in River Monsters: True Stories of the Ones That Didn't Get Away, the long-awaited book adaptation of Animal Planet's all-time highest-rated show.

Honest and intriguing

I love Jeremy Wade; he's so humble and knowledgeable about fish and fisheries. When reading this, I felt like he and I were at a bar or Cafe having drinks and discussing his biggest catches. If you're a fan (or hater) of River Monsters I recommend this book. Wade really puts a lot of things into perspective about the show, his actions, and the true situation of fisheries around the world. I sincerely hope Wade puts out another book or show as his insights and efforts are truly eye-opening.

Love this book. I am not remotely a fisherman by any stretch but found this book fascinating.

VICIOUS fishes.

This book's about very dangerous & engrossing fishing.

It's the very best (or worst) of Jeremy Wade's often deadly adventures.

I’m not a fan of fishing. I tried, but I couldn’t get past the sharp hooks, all the blood, the traumatizing... and it looked bad for the fish too. That being said, I really love this book. I enjoyed this book more than his Animal Planet program.

Jeremy Wade's heroic - a pure 'catch & release' ichthyologist working to preserve endangered species.

MONSTERS.
This book has more monsters in it than a semester of Greek Mythology.

Monster Fish:
They are grotesque in the extreme. They have thick scales and armor plates, poisonous spines, hundreds of razor sharp teeth, & sharp saw-blades in their ugly maws, some big enough to swallow a child. Their bodies are all muscle and they sometimes weigh more than Jeremy Wade.

MONSTER HUNTER
Jeremy Wade has lived a most extraordinary life.
When Jeremy’s not telling you jaw-dropping “fish stories” he’s talking about his world wide expeditions & exploits which are just as interesting as his monster fish adventures. (Sometimes more!)

Monster's Lair
He travels the world to extremely remote and impossibly exotic places. There, he'll dive into murky water filled with dangerously strange things like drowned temples, flooded forests, and monster infested water-ways filled with liquid mud.

WHERE MONSTERS DWELL
Jeremy struggles into submerged caves with huddles of monsters. He searches under rivers so dangerous it's a miracle he's not dead, or maimed. I can't imagine having to go where he goes unless it was a horrible punishment.

Like H. P. Lovecraft's weird tales in which the ancient tome called the Necronomicon is used, Jeremy reads through ancient (meaning 1948) texts (like 'Game fish of the World' ) for information on monsters (exotic game fish) written in part by infamous necromancers (fishermen-heroes like Hemingway).

Narration:
Jeremy Wade sincerely tells his own story adding to the awesome "I was there and this really happened" aspect of the book.

GOOD BOOK?
When I finished, I started listening to it again. A darn good book in my opinion.
Recommended.
