About this listen

These 2 stories from the pen of one of America's earliest and most popular writers draw upon the myths and legends of local and European folklore to create memorable, richly American tales and characters. In the title story, Rip Van Winkle wanders into the Catskill Mountains before the Revolutionary War. When he helps a dwarf carry a heavy keg to a ninepins game, it seems natural to drink the strange, small men's brew - but he hasn't the head for it, and wakes up 20 years later! In "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," the gawky schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane, and his rival Brom Bones, both court beautiful Katrina Van Tassel - until a Headless Horseman makes a ghostly ride.Public Domain (P)1993 Recorded Books, Inc. Editorial reviews

"Rip Van Winkle" is one of Washington Irving's most iconic scary stories. Rip falls asleep after drinking too much and awakens 20 years into the future with a rusty gun, a dead wife, and a now-adult daughter. What's more, looks like Rip has missed the entire American Civil War. George Guidall is an incredibly talented audio performer. He brings this famous and traditional American ghost story to life. Guidall plays with his intonation, utilizing both high and low registers to make this audio version even more captivating than the original. In particular, Guidall endows elderly Rip with a spot-on croaky and bewildered voice. This audiobook is a great Halloween-time listen.

Critic reviews

"Irving belongs to the number of writers who can be read by all who admire a combination of elegance, sentiment, and wit." (American Literature and Culture)

Great Stories

Great short stories with strong morals. I love reading Irving! His imagery is vivid, and it is easy to get sucked into the situations.

Both stories are now included!

These short stories are excellent, and the narrator is one of the BEST! There had been an issue of only Rip Van Winkle being included but this has now been corrected. The length of this audiobook at the time I purchased it had been listed as 48 minutes but now it is two hours and 14 minutes long. If you purchased this prior to this correction, you just need to download it again as I did and you will gain access to both stories.

Loved revisiting these two classics

Happy to confirm as reported by an earlier reviewer that both stories are, in fact, included in this audio.

I found these stories, often read in elementary school, to be every bit as much enjoyable and interesting to me now at age 60+, maybe even more so since I'm able to appreciate subtleties I missed as a child. I loved the description of the Catskills and the 18th century society.

George Guidall is as ever one of the best narrators. I happily buy anything narrated by him without apprehension and these two stories of Washington Irving are no exception.

That said, the narration of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow--that story alone--by Tom Mison is excellent also.

Sleepy Hollow Story Missing

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I needed both stories. The title says Sleepy Hollow is included, but it is not. Have we done something wrong in the download?
