this is a wonderful book. Catherine Pittman makes complicated brain science accessible to not only the provider, but the consumer of mental health treatment. the narrator is a little bit boring at times, but the repetition in the book is excellent. stick with it. and read it again and again. I highly recommend this as a therapist who treats OCD on a regular basis.

I love very detailed books that explain exactly how things work. This book is that. As one example, the book helped me realize that fighting the stress response backfires because once the adrenaline is released, it has to work it’s way through the body for the stress response to be over. I used to freak out each time I felt my anxiety levels rise. Now I just mindfully breathe into it, waiting for it to work it’s course. It’s much more freeing. You definitely still need to work with a therapist, and the authors say so. But this book can definitely be of amazing help on the journey to taking back your life from OCD.

Wonderful in-depth neuroscience of OCD

Complete explanation and immersion into the workings of the brain. There was not a single passage that didn't resonate somehow, and the feeling of be guided by a trusted friend to look behind a fiendish curtain is a journey anyone who struggles with this affliction needs to take. Hell, I'll probably take it again.

Life Changer

This book was such an amazing comfort and I will def read it again and again. I wish help like this had been more accessible when I was a little girl. I thought I was crazy back then and sadly, anyone who I shared my ocd with only confirmed that for me. It is so amazing to know how intricate ocd is and how many ppl suffer from it. These writers are geniuses and the narrator was like a wise old sage, soothing your mind with every word.

I love the breakdown of all the chapters and how in depth they explain the science of ocd. I’ve heard throughout my life that ocd is not a thing or just to knock it off. I don’t mean that I will continue to use it as an excuse for my bad behavior, I only mean that it’s reassuring to see it emphasized as a true mental condition and to know that there is hope and help.

I really learned so much more about ocd and the science was mostly easy to follow. I think I am going to name my ocd Amygdala lmao. The examples of sufferers used was excellent and my heart twisted for each of them. The breathing and muscle exercises never work for me but everything else was incredibly insightful. I also loved that they mentioned the serenity prayer which is a logical saying apart from religion.

I highly recommend this godsend of a book to anyone who has ocd in their life, whether you are the sufferer or watching a loved one suffer. This is the help that they need, especially if they are wary of going to an actual therapist. Hands down best book on ocd I have ever read. So grateful ♥️

Concise and Well-Explained

This book was a good start to define anxiety. It defined it, described the responses in the body and provided ways to cope. It clearly defends the idea that getting rid of anxiety is not an option but that there are ways to soften its presence so you can live life more effectively.
