About this listen

What if Mulan had to travel to the Underworld?

When Captain Shang is mortally wounded by Shan Yu in battle, Mulan must travel to the Underworld, Diyu, in order to save him from certain death. But King Yama, the ruler of Diyu, is not willing to give Shang up easily.

With the help of Shang's great lion guardian ShiShi, Mulan must traverse Diyu to find Shang's spirit, face harrowing obstacles, and leave by sunrise - or become King Yama's prisoner forever. Moreover, Mulan is still disguised as the soldier called Ping, wrestling with the decision to reveal her true identity to her closest friend. Will Mulan be able to save Shang before it's too late? Will he ever be able to trust her again? Or will she lose him - and be lost in the Underworld - forever?

The best one so far!

I liked this a lot! The hero's journey from a very different cultural perspective, and a good way for teens to start exploring identity and the weight of expectations (from society, family, and self).

My only complaint was some of the narration; sometimes to depict shouting or yelling, Ms. Zeller would strain her voice, but that might be preferable to her actually shouting. I thought she portrayed both male and female roles well, and maybe I'm in the minority but I actually liked her performance of the guardian.

Overall I've been listening to the series because I'm a grown-a$$ Disney fan with trash YA taste, but I actually thought this one was the best so far. Give it a shot!

Fun simple way to expand an already beautiful story

I enjoyed the narration quite a bit the story was such a great way to add a whole adventure into an already beautiful story. It was exciting and thrilling. I wish there had been just a touch bit more romance. One of my favorite twisted tales for sure

damn is it good!

I feel like I learned more about China and its customs and Heritage. But also a lot of the things that didn't make sense or we're loose ends in the actual movie Mulan were tied together. It was really good

Best twisted tale yet!

I am SO IMPRESSED by this story. It is completely original and so well tied to the original story as well. It’s such a beautiful tale and I love how it educates more about Chinese beliefs. I also love the narrator chosen. I will read again and again! Bravo! I hope she writes another twisted tale.

Reflection indeed

Mulan/Ping goes to the underworld to get Captian Lee back. She makes a deal with the underworld king, to bring Le back to the gate before sunrise. With Lee's family guardian she battles the ghosts, demons, and tricks to get Capt. Lee back. However, she doesn't realize her biggest threat to the mission is her own dishonesty. Mulan will have to make tough choices to get everyone back to the living.
