Publisher's summary

Fans of Grace Livingston Hill's The Enchanted Barn will thoroughly enjoy the story of Cornelia Copley, whose plans to finish college and get her degree in interior decoration are thwarted when she is unexpectedly called home due to her mother's illness. Heartbroken at the interruption and not understanding why her father can't see how important her education is, Cornelia pours her heart out to an older woman on the train who kindly assures her that "no one can take a daughter's place when there is trouble".

Cornelia soon finds there is plenty of trouble: Her mother has had a breakdown and is in a sanitarium; her father has lost his job and taken a lower position; and her brother Carey is going with a wild crowd. Up til now she's had no idea that the family has moved to a dreary house in a poorer part of town and that they all had been making sacrifices for months to keep her at school. Her plucky younger siblings have been doing their best, but the entire family is overwhelmed. Very soon, Cornelia must marshal all the talents and drive that made her an exemplary student to help revitalize her family. She finds she can't do it alone, and she rediscovers her Christian faith to help her along.

Published in 1924, set in Philadelphia

“Aw, gee!” Another old classic from “America’s storyteller” Grace Livingston Hill, just perfectly narrated. I really enjoyed Cornelia and her siblings, especially valiant young Harry and Louisa. Once Cornelia got past her bitter disappointment at having to leave college early (realistic) she stepped up to the plate like a champ. Her heart really went out to her family. It was uplifting to see her bring order and sparkle to that dreary little house, with the help of her family, a neighborhood carpenter, and a budding mechanical genius. It was a fixer-upper for sure, and much of the story revolves around remodeling, cleaning, painting, building, creating, and plenty of baking and cooking. Hot gingerbread! Throughout, the focus is on trusting in God, singing in the church choir, etc.

Another aspect of the story revolves around eldest son Carey, whose totally “gets” machinery and wants to work with automobiles, etc. but his bookkeeper father doesn’t approve (1920, not yet an acknowledged career occupation, apparently). With all the troubles his family has experienced, Carey feels beaten down. He is getting bitter and developing a wastrel lifestyle.

There is also a developing romance — just a small part of the plot. Also a felony — such adventure on the way to church! And a vivid scene involving a child in a car.

For me, the charm in this story is the family, working together, growing closer, finding hope and capability.

The fly in the ointment for me is the judgmental thinking of the author, but I remind myself she did write it 100 years ago from a Presbyterian view. Dancing is bad. Chewing gum is bad — especially if you smack it. Wearing rouge and lipstick is almost wicked. Lol. I felt sorry for Clytie.

One of my favorites!

I absolutely loved Re-creations! GLH has been one of the best Christian fiction authors! You would not know she wrote it 90+ years ago. Timely for today!

Heart-warming Story

A young lady studying interior design leaves college due to her family's financial struggles but finds joy and fulfillment in family life and using her skills in a different way.

As always, Anne Hancock does a fabulous job of narrating.

A hundred-year-old love story

Grace Livingston Hill’s stories have the innocent protagonist, a hero like a knight in shining armor, and sudden circumstances of great loss. Somehow, the old fashioned girl manages to prevail and by the end of the story, she’s acquired a new world view, a wonderful love, and happiness. They’re really fun and a pleasant break from bleak Realism. It’s like the Land of Oz, where everything is in technicolor instead of black and white.
The best one on Audible is Exit Betty, then The Best Man.
There are many of them in the Public Domain but sadly, not all available here on Audible.
Re-Creations is a fun read. Enjoy!

Christian romance

Grace Livingston Hill is one of my favorite christen romance writers. She always manages to tell portray regular people, their struggles and their awakening to God without being preachy.
