About this listen

"What did you have? A boy or a girl?" Kyl and Brent imagined it would be years before their child would identify with a gender. Until then...

As a first-time parent, Kyl Myers had one aspect dialed in from the start: not being beholden to the boy-girl binary, disparities, or stereotypes from the day a child is born. With no wish to eliminate gender but rather gender discrimination, Kyl and her husband, Brent, ventured off on a parenting path less traveled. Raising a confident, compassionate, and self-aware person was all that mattered.

In this illuminating memoir, Kyl delivers a liberating portrait of a family's choice to dismantle the long-accepted and often-harmful social construct of what it means to be assigned a gender from birth. As a sociologist, Kyl explores the science of gender and sex and the adulthood gender inequities that start in childhood. As a loving parent, Kyl shares the joy of watching an amazing child named Zoomer develop their own agency to grow happily and healthily toward their own gender identity and expression.

Candid and surprising, Raising Them is an inspiration to parents and to anyone open to understanding the limitless possibilities of being yourself.

Your journey serves as a wonderful guide to our family as my 3rd grandchild Quinn Oak, is now starting their life journey along with their parents in a similar, gender neutral fashion.

Your words are helpful to me and to them.

Thank you.

I knew some of the story, but not all. You will laugh and you will cry and you will find language to express your own binaries and find hope in all you’re doing to change the binaries and patriarchy we all live within. THANK YOU KYL AND FAMILY!

What an amazing listen

"Raising Them", gives a new refreshing perspective on gender and biological sex and their relationship to our identity. It's filled with heartwarming moments, and a few places where I actually held my breath. Like all of us, Dr. Myers is a relatively new parent who is doing the best they can, but they're also brave enough to try to break out the mold at the same time to benefit not only their child's future, but all of our children. Loved it.

I can barely write a full sentence without feeling emotional! I have 3 beautiful children and my Middle child is 5. They do not conform to gender norms and my family has not been very supportive.
This book has brought me so much peace and given me tools to face this world head on. I feel confident as a parent of a child that needs me too be their advocate.
I wish Zommer's story was available to me while I was pregnant with my first. To anyone that is considering being a parent...THIS IS A MUST!

Life Changing!

We are expecting and it’s important to us that we create a “gender full” world as opposed to a “gender-less” world or one full of gender stereotyped boxes our kid has to fit into, to use some of the author’s words. We found this book very helpful in identifying ways to navigate certain topics and interactions, and it makes gender creative parenting sound less scary than many imagine it to be.

I will note though that the author mentions a few times that their family’s experience (one they describe of relative ease with their families and society in Salt Lake, albeit with plenty of negative internet feedback) is not everyone’s case. Depending on your family background and dynamics, socioeconomic status, academic background, cultural or religious foundations etc, this specific family’s case may feel overwhelmingly positive when you’re in a dark space. Advise approaching it in that mindful state.

Incredibly valuable read for a new parent
