Publisher's summary

In Rachel & Leah, Orson Scott Card paints vivid portraits of four celebrated women—Laban's daughters, Rachel and Leah; Bilhah, the orphaned servant; and Zilpah, an ambitious member of Laban's household. Into the desert camp comes Jacob, a handsome and charismatic kinsman who is clearly destined to be Rachel's husband. But that doesn't prevent the other woman from vying for his attention.

Tracing their lives from childhood to maturity, Card shows how these women change in relationship to each other and how they are changed again by the holy books that Jacob brings with him. Based on the abbreviated sketches in the book of Genesis, the author composes a brilliant and altogether believable personality for each of these complex women, showing how God touched their lives in ways that will seem familiar to many listeners today.

fantastic book

it is a very good interpretation of life back then... it made me realize the hardships and limitation is the day. how back then good was truly in the center of all things. we just think we are in control ..

Wonderful characters

I really enjoyed this book as the author developed each of the people with rich subtext. I loved the way he expanded the bits we know from scripture to paint the life events and motivations behind the key people’s actions. I especially loved the benevolent take on Laben’s decision to send Leah instead of Rachel to marry Jacob first as I had always a bad taste in my mouth for him in the past from scripture. Of course who knows their real motivations…
I also really enjoyed watching how the Word of God transformed Leah.

If there is one thing I got a little riesig in this book and in Sarah which I listened to before this, it’s how certain characters so annoyingly make themselves into victims. I guess their are real people like that- but I have little patience for them!

All in all- wonderful book. I plan to get the next two- hope they are available as audio books.

Audio failure

This is an amazing story, but the ends of the chapters are missing. Well written and lovely narrator.

Well Done

Love hearing from OSC at the end. Fabulous way to perceive the characters and story. I believe Leah, Rachel and Jacob would agree.

Problems with audio presentation

Several of the first few chapters had the audio clearly cutting off before the chapter was complete. I was concerned this would be the case for the whole book, but after the first few, I believe the full chapter was presented. I did not like this book as much as the first two in the series, but that was a matter of my preferences.
