Publisher's summary

From New York Times best-selling author Sabrina Jeffries comes a sparkling new series about an oft-widowed mother’s grown children who blaze through society in their quest for the truth about their fathers...and in the process find that love just might conquer all....

A series of stepfathers and a difficult childhood have left Fletcher “Grey” Pryde, fifth duke of Greycourt, with a guarded heart, enviable wealth, and the undeserved reputation of a rogue. Grey’s focus on expanding his dukedom allows him little time to find a wife. But when his mother is widowed yet again and he meets the charmingly unconventional woman managing his stepfather’s funeral, he’s shocked to discover how much they have in common. Still, Grey isn’t interested in love, no matter how pretty, or delightfully outspoken, the lady....

Beatrice Wolfe gave up on romance long ago, and the arrogant duke of Greycourt with his rakish reputation isn’t exactly changing her mind. Then Grey agrees to assist his grief-stricken mother with her latest “project”: schooling spirited, unfashionable Beatrice for her debut. Now that Beatrice is seeing through Grey’s charms to his wounded heart, she’s having trouble keeping him at arm’s length. But once Grey starts digging into her family’s secrets, she must decide whether her loyalties lie with her family...or with the man whose lessons capture her heart....

“Anyone who loves romance must read Sabrina Jeffries!” (Lisa Kleypas, New York Times best-selling author)

Great original storyline!

Loved this book, largely because Beverley Crick is such a marvelous narrator. She excels in creating male voices, as well as female ones. This love story is also a sweet one, about a duke who had a difficult childhood and a woman -- poor cousin to his half-brother-- who also has survived her own troubled past..

Family Reunion of Sorts

There are dukes a-plenty in this first of the series. Add suspicious deaths and it would seem hard to find time for love. The author, however, weaves it seamlessly into the story. This is my first book by Ms. Jeffries and it won’t be my last.
The narrator did a good job and all the male voices were different enough to be distinguishable from each other. Kudos to her for that.

Who's that Duke

Duke's, father's, step father's, brothers, cousin's, sisters, friends and a mother....This was more of who's who's and not a who done it. Still it was mildly entertaining.

Well done.

Good mix of romance and intrigue. The narrator did a great job of voicing each character.

Annoying

The narrator was perfect. The duke was annoying. Joshua was annoying. Too much back and forth keeping everything hidden. Super descriptive sex scenes which didn’t seem like they fit into the story.

But who!

I didn’t find it hard to keep the any characters straight but more a pull form the disbelief because 3 dukes in a family is silly.
the main characters had real chemistry and the their sore spots hit the others soft spots in a healing way. The love story was beautiful and believable. All the side relationships were lovely. The bothers were jovial the brother sister was loving. And under all was levels of complexity built from the realities of the situation. The author left nothing out of any of the relationships.
However there was a lot of talk of murder with out a resolution! If I wanted a straight romance I would have read one. So I guess it’s on to the next book.

Good

I enjoyed the book. I liked the premise that a woman would marry 3 Duke's in a row... that would be one heck of a woman.
The characters were likable and interesting. I like Gray because he was confident but rejected societal norms. (even though he expected others to obey them - lol). This and his emotional scars made him evenly matched to the shy, swett but unsophisticated Beatrice.

The intense attraction between the couple was portrayed in athpugh h believable, thoughtful, but sensual manner. The sexy moments were enticing but not crude.

The mystery behind the romance was intriguing but ends on a cliffhanger. I'm not a fan of that tactic. Hence, I removed one star.
