Publisher's summary
Pride & Ownership holds no punches. Chief Rick Lasky takes a hard look at the fire service and finds it short on the only element that makes it effective: passion. Chief Lasky gives an upfront and honest criticism about the need to reignite the love of the job on every level, from chiefs and on down.
Do you have what it takes?
Not everyone is cut out for the fire service. It takes only the best to serve the public when people need help most. Pride and Ownership calls for men and women with honor and integrity to measure up to the task.
There's nothing else in the world like being a firefighter. Every day, Chief Lasky remembers why his job is the best in the world, and he brings that passion to Pride & Ownership. Lasky revisits the proud history and tradition of the fire service and reflects on the family values and brotherhood that have made firefighting a truly family-oriented vocation.

My career as a firefighter/paramedic stretched from 1974 to 2000 when were inventing EMS as we went along. These are stories from those years on the street. That place I named so long ago, the other reality that exists just outside most people’s everyday lives. It is a place that seems to exist parallel to the normal workaday existence: yet it is only a car accident or cardiac away for any of us. It manifested itself in brushfires, house fires, shootings, stabbings, hangings, accidents with injuries, cardiacs, codes, drownings, and a thousand other emergencies.

Story
In early 2012, Jim Tselikis visited LA and met up with his cousin Sabin Lomac. Over a few drinks they waxed nostalgic about their childhood in Maine, surrounded by family, often elbow deep in delicious lobster while gathered around the picnic table. From this strong memory was born the very first Cousins Maine Lobster food truck. Smart, authentic marketing, and sustainable, delicious ingredients helped turn that one food truck into an overnight sensation.

People are the problem. They're always the problem. If a business person goes home frustrated, if they talk with their significant other about it, if they lay awake at night stewing about it, inevitably the problem is some person at work - a colleague, subordinate, or boss. Handling people issues is every leader's major headache. It's what takes up the majority of their time and - more important - the bulk of their head space. Every leader can and must develop this most important of all management skills.

I had been wanting to read Pride & Ownership for a few years now but never could make myself spend the money. However when I saw that it was here and narrated by the author I couldn't pass it up. It truly is a must read for anyone in the fire service no matter rank or experience. I will definitely be listening again.

What a great listen
Thanks for the fresh perspective on the brotherhood. As a newer firefighter with only 7 years on I came on with stories from my dad about a brotherhood. When I got to the station all I saw were a bunch of individuals with the same shirt. After this book I will strive to recreate to the best of my ability what my father and you experienced as a brotherhood.
