Alexander and his growing legion have managed to escape Nova Roma and, more importantly, learned that the rest of the world may not be as ravaged by monsters as they had all thought. Join them as they set sail for ancient Venice, the Queen of the Adriatic, to try to learn more about the wider world outside Nova Roma. Along the way, they'll encounter a growing plague of deadly pirates, deceitful old merchant families out to quash any new competitors in the region, mysterious new allies, and much more.

Just as Alexander is starting to feel hope that humanity may actually survive, something happens to tear him away from everyone and everything he has come to care about. Lost, shackled, and without the majority of his skills, Alexander will be forced to confront a new side of himself, a darker, more violent side that threatens to take control of his mind and the new powers he has managed to craft for himself. If he can't learn to resist the growing corruption of his mind, he may not just be a danger to himself and those he cares about, but may become a danger to the very world itself.

Audiobook narrated by the wonderful Christian J. Gilliland.

bit exposition heavy but good

need to cut some some of the exposition in some of this I was starting to nod off. The narrator was not helping, very clear reading but voice was flat an borrowing button all in all solid 4 stars.

Awesome story

I’ll be preordering every release. Bummed Jakes got out on back burner but I do like this series much better.

Great Series

I'm loving this series so far. Pretty perspective coming from the viewpoint of a hyper intelligent AI.

The narrator still is inconsistent.

Mispronunciation and accents that are too thick.
Story is great, but the narrator could be better.

Very enjoyable

This series was very enjoyable. I loved it all the way through. Honestly, I can't wait for book 3. This series is top tier.

Christian Does such a good job narrating this book. Just like he did in book one, he deserves a 5 star for sure.

My only complaints are about his skills, it kinda sucks that we have to wait till next book to see his upgrades. I also think he needs something more, his skills are cool but he is lacking in areas. He needs a AOE attack or something.
Other than that, I like this series. The characters only got better, so did the plot.

Overall, this series is awesome. J.R. Mathews did super good writing this.

A few audio editing errors, but a solid sequel

Another great listen. I enjoyed this one as much or more than the first. Admittedly I’m a sucker for a particular trope that I won’t name here for spoiler reasons, so that strongly played in your favor

There were some things that felt off to me but I’m not sure how to put them into words at the moment. They weren’t big enough to detract, per say, but something just feels….off…to my mind

There were a few issues with some audio editing where some edits didn’t get cut/edited correctly so there were a few points of a weird overlapping. A particularly memorable one was the narrator coughing that they obviously attempted to edit out but it just ended up with overlaid tracks it seems. Other than that an enjoyable performance as well.

Decent

The main character got much dumber so his mind should go down or his human mind was always dumbing him down the longer he was in it. *shrugs* The more human the dumber, makes sense to me, feels bad.

Interesting take on the genre

Wasn’t sure if I would like these stories. A I which creates a body for itself while surfing dimensions for the alt-reality it wants was a unique twist. That said it took a chapters before I started liking the narrator. Thought narration was flat lacking emotional expression however that improved as it continued. Hopefully the third book will be ready soon.
