Pig Little Lies

I started this series b/c I needed to read something light & fun. I must have found it as I’ve just finished Book 5 & I’ve purchased the last 3 published. I would recommend the Pet Psychic Magical Mysteries for anyone who likes light paranormal stories. I’m looking forward to listening to book 6.

Enjoyable Listen

Erin Johnson did it again. Pig Little Lies combines magic, mystery, snark, and laughter. Hannah Somerville does a wonderful job of bringing the characters and world Erin has created to life. Now that Peter knows Jolene’s secret, can they move forward and continue to work together? Perhaps even rekindle that romantic spark that had had begun to grow? Or will they continue to studiously avoid one another despite their mutual attraction?

This Series is Such a Stress Reliever

I enjoy this series so much. It is a cozy-themed set with a shape shifter (Jolene) who has been cursed with magic and now she can talk to animals. Okay. I am a sucker for books with talking critters. Daisy the German Shepherd lie detector steals so many scenes. The dog is in love with her human police officer handler and he loves her as well. Jolene and the officer were a partnership and possible romantic couple until he finds out she was born a shifter, apparently in this magical world shifters are considered lesser, dirty humans. I cannot help but think of the racism rampant in society and how you are judged by circumstances out of your control rather than your good deeds. Jolene suffers like this. The mysteries are good and in this book it is a murder in a Ponzi scheme company. Who killed the owner with the pet pig? Everyone associated with her probably wanted to. Can Jolene get back in Peter’s good graces? Should she want to? This is good world-building where we become invested in the characters’ lives. They have a lot of issues navigating society on the island. I look forward to the next installment. The narrator does a great job, by the way. Note to author: Can Daisy get her own story? I would LOVE her point of view.

A perfect capture of real pyramid schemes

I love this series. Erin weaves a very compelling story as a fallen from grace lawyer now in a magical slum becomes a police consultant. It has the best parts of murder mysteries mixed with the best parts of a magical world. As a recent law grad, I also love the legal references. This mystery has a good hook and keeps you guessing along the way as interesting people are introduced. The story even gets around the gritty downside of audio mysteries by having its own local sets of curses so that profanity isn't off putting or even horrible. There is no traditional profanity and even my kids love to hear the story about Joleen :)

Erin breaks down the familiar aspects of multi level marketing. It is masterfully orchestrated and quite surprising in its twists and turns! Love the story.

good standalone mystery

This is the fifth in the series. After Jolene tells Peter the truth about her shifter status and loss of magical abilities, the couple is on the outs. Their first encounter after the reveal (a month later) is very awkward. It is interesting how Daisy and Jolene get along much better nowadays. You can see that Daisy deeply cares about Peter and wants him to be happy. Throughout the story we see that both Jolene and Peter did not bring their “A game to” to the investigation.

So, who killed the owner of the pyramid scheme and why?
I enjoyed the story and the narrator just enhances the story. The twists, turns, and revelations about Jolene's curse just brings more to the party.
