Another winner by John Sandford!

Although the story started a little slow for me, it quickly picked up kept and the excitement going. Thoroughly enjoy Richard Ferrone's narration.

Nice!!

Another gritty Davenport plot, complete with Davenports top 100 greatest Rock'n'Roll road trip hits. I wrote them down. Will edit a bit, but my kind of list for the most part.

First of all, I love listening to Richard Ferrone.

He, along with Eric Conger, Dick Hill, Scott Brick, Luke Daniels, George Guidall and a few other notables, are my favorite narrators in the house of Audible. And I have, in my library, every one of John Sandford's works. Now, having said that, his rendition of the women in this book, specifically the fairie, was not one of my favorites. Yes, he is a baritone, and you wouldn't expect him to sound like a woman, and he doesn't. However, his voice inflections soften a bit when he's reading Weather or any other female character, as you would expect. (The best male/female narration team comes from Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy reading David Baldacci's King and Maxwell series.....but I digress). His rendition of the fairie, or whatever the character name was so over the top that it made me cringe thoughout the listening experience. Toward the end, I wanted to puch out my eardrums. The whine in the voice was just so unnatural. I've heard plenty of women whine in my lifetime.... sadly, I was the cause for most of them, but I've never heard any woman sound like this. This is the only book I've ever heard him make such a drastic change in the way he narrated a female character. I really hope to not hear that again.

Weakest story so far

Yes, the narration of Fairy was painful to listen to, but honestly, so are some women’s (and men’s) voices in real life ;-)

Ferrone has been solid this far, so I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt. I’ve never had a problem with his acting on any other female
Voices in the whole series.

My issue was the story. I hope this isn’t a sign that the author is running out of ideas for killers. I’m actually going to try the first Virgil Flowers books next to give myself a break from 18 straight Prey novels.

FERRONE DOES IT ALL

I wish the mewling about Richard Ferrone's so-called "inability" to do female voices would cease. He can do women, children singing, and multiple male character voices. Get a life!
You already have one of the top tier mystery/thriller writers working today.

Another Davenport Adventure

I simply Love Davenport in Minneapolis/St.Paul and all the details that come to life from having lived right there. R.Ferrone is for me the voice of Lucas. Enjoyably fast paced, with a few Big Thrillers to keep all the attention running..... Good Book!!

Prey never lets me down!

Where does Phantom Prey rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Prey is my favorite series...

What does Richard Ferrone bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He is by far, the best male reader that I have listened to... and I listen to ALOT of audio books... He just makes me chuckle - the way he reads Lucas or Virgil... I can just picture these two guys - just by how he reads their lines... and of course John Sanford for creating the perfect lines for him to read!!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I always laugh... he is such a down to earth writer - writes what people actually say...

Any additional comments?

Love it Love it Love it!

VERY DISAPPOINTING

This mystery seemed simple-minded to me. The clues could have been gathered and the case solved in 40 pages. The worst Sandford homicide mystery I've read!
