About this listen

The first two chapters in Anne McCaffrey's “Talents Saga" are featured in this recording:

Pegasus in Flight

In this sequel to Ride the Pegasus, McCaffrey continues the story of the Talents — psionic beings who were once feared and despised, but have become necessary to the comfort and conduct of society.

As director of a parapsychic center, telepath Rhyssa Owen coordinates the job assignments for the psychically gifted Talents in her group. She is always ready to welcome new Talents. When an extraordinary man with no measurable Talents appears, however, Rhyssa realizes that she will need to reassess the potential of all Talentkind.

To Ride Pegasus

Molly, Charity, Barbara, Dorotea, and Amalda are members of an elite cadre of beings who have stepped out of the ordinary human race to enter their own! “Talents” are extraordinary people who read minds, heal bodies, divert disasters, and foretell the future. Despite this, they have become pariahs in their own land.

The first book is the second book. (ch. 18)

I loved both books. The narrator is fantastic. I would have given it 5 stars all around. The problem is the two books are in the reverse order. so if you read this, skip to chapter 18 and listen to To Ride a Pegasus first because that is the correct order. by the time I realized it, I was already halfway through Pegasus in Flight and had to listen to them in reverse order and that was frustrating for me.

Great Story, Narrator too rushed.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

An excellent story, interesting cultural situations and characters.

What did you like best about this story?

The main characters tend to be admirable and competent. Surprising situations abound.

What didn’t you like about Adrienne Barbeau’s performance?

She has a nice familiar voice. Sadly, she's in way too much of a hurry and it sounds as if it were recorded under a bucket.

Did Pegasus in Flight & To Ride Pegasus inspire you to do anything?

Inspired me to read Pegasus in Space.

Any additional comments?

The narration reminds me of many of the old "lighthouse for the blind" recordings where a reader seems to be reading for speed. The production quality is not so good, sounds like it was recorded under a bucket. That said, I did enjoy the story and I got used to the narration speed.

The stories are backwards

The reading was good I enjoyed it but the stories are in the wrong order. To Ride Pegasus should be first followed by Pegasus in Flight. As I was already on the road when I realized that I listened to it that way.

Low Audio Quality

I loved finding an audio copy of this edition, but the audio quality was so poor I could not listen.

Flipped, Not Full

First realize the books are out of order. Start at Chapter 18 to the end, then go to Chapter 1.

This is one of my long time favorite books, so I am very familiar with it, so when I heard them skip over sections, even though minor, it was jarring and annoying. Presumably they did it to trim down the time.

Aside from that, the reader was excellent and was able to switch accents cleanly. Good job it just needs some tweaks.

Good Vocals, Missing Many Lines

If you know the books as well as I do, you may be very frustrated that much of the color and explanation was cut from the book.
I lived the narrator and the way they distinguished vocal from mental communication.

A great offering from a great author

I came to this series as a child on the recommendation of my mother, who knew my love of science fiction. Listening to it in audio format is great in it's own right - Ms. Barbeau's diction is crisp and well inflected. if you haven't heard or read this series, you should!

I only have one complaint about this two-in-one volume, and that is that they are out of order chronologically. To the new listener, I highly recommend skipping to the "middle" of the audiobook and listening to "To Ride Pegasus" first before going back to listen to "Pegasus in Flight." You might get thrown off by a several decade jump backwards in time otherwise!

Two books in one.

Great story! One problem-you need to put the first book (To Ride Pegasus) in the primary or first position, so you can listen to it first.
