Pearly's first trip to the circus with his dad and little sister was magical. He'd never had cotton candy, and he vowed not to eat his; he'd keep it forever. He felt a kinship with the clowns, and he almost understood the strange symbols on their costumes. He even dared a quick touch.
On the runway, Dad just couldn't manage to toss the ball and win a kitten for Lucy...until a clown pulled Pearly between the tents and offered to make it happen, for a price.
"Would you like to be a clown, Pearly?"
Then, everything went sideways.

Or was it?
Sarah Colton’s narration perfectly complements Dona Fox's skillful weaving of the tapestry of this tale. You won't find gratuitous blood or gore here. What you will find is a story replete with meticulous descriptions that fashion the scenic backdrops as well as the visages and personalities of each of her characters. You do not even need to use your imagination…she provides everything that you need to visualize the unfolding story. But I must caution you …do not get too comfortable. You will think that you know where the story is going, but then the plot takes an unexpected turn.
Arriving at this new juncture, you quickly recover and again you believe you can foresee the ending, but I can assure you that you will again be wrong. And again.
The final passages cascade into a horrific climax that literally made my heart plummet.
As my pulse returned to normal, I smiled.
I never really liked cotton candy anyway.

Clowns are always a little creepy IMHO, and this story does not change my mind about that. Ms. Fox has written a creepy, yet tragic, tale that will haunt me for a long, long time.
The narrator, Sarah Colton, was perfect and her performance added a lot to this story. I don't think I will be grabbing any cotton candy anytime soon! I was given the chance to listen to this book by the author/narrator/publisher and chose to review it.
