Publisher's summary

Ten years ago, Paul Giacomin's corrupt father and loose mother used the boys as a pawn in their violent race: Only Spenser could call them off and straighten out the misled teen—almost getting killed in the process. Paul is now 24 and reconciled to his mother's wanton ways. But when Patty Giacomin vanishes, Paul begs Spenser to help him rescue her from the clutches of her boyfriend, a shady character he's sure coerced his mother into running.

As Spenser—accompanied by Paul, Susan Silverman, and the redoubtable Hawk—follow Patty's trail to its astonishing conclusion, he is led back through Paul's own rites of passage to the lanes of his own memories. The boy Spenser was and the man Paul must become race toward a confrontation that may break their hearts...and threaten their lives.

Surprised

If you are a Spenser fan, you will enjoy.

The story's ending was a bit of a surprise and a bit weaker than Parker normally presents. I prefer Joe Montenga as a narrator

Good but not the best in the series.

As always, entertaining. Susan is annoying as usual. Not sure if it the new narrator but Spenser seemed less smart Alec-y this installment. Narrator nails all but Susan and Hawk.
All in all, worth reading if you are a fan of the series.

David Dukes needs to be replaced

This is the first book by Parker that made me want to stop listening.
The narrarator was horrible.
No chapters, phony voices, I thought this book would never end.
I only hope that the next book is better but if Dukes is narrating it will be a total waste of time.

good story, bad narrator

I just could not stand the narration. I think the worst part was the Hawk representation. I cringed every time hawk had to talk.

Great story but I disliked the reader

I miss the previous narrator. I may stop listening of this one continues. Great Story.

Bring back Pritchard!

No attempt at character continuity! After nearly 20 books, at least try to get the characters to sound a little like the previous narrator.

I do not believe Dukes captures the essence

Spenser is not a whispering film noir type of character. I believe Spenser to be brash and not soft spoken like Dukes plays him. And Dont get me started on his portrayal of Hawk.

Poor performance

Not as good as Mr. Pritchard. I was disappointed in the performance. Maybe next time.

Terrible reading

Shocking how badly the reader mangled several of the names: “Morris” is not pronounced “Maurice”; Giacomin is pronounced Jock-a-min, not Gee-uh-komen. One or two words were mispronounced. The voice for Hawk is all wrong. Spenser’s voice is dead, without inflection, but that’s not how that character would speak; probably trying for Chandler/Hammett/Spillane-sounding tough-guy, but that’s not this character. He often put the em-PHA-sis on the wrong sy-LA-ble. Ruined a great story.

David Duke blows

He simply doesn’t get it and doesn’t care to.

Someone should take him out back and smack him around.

This audiobook should be re-recorded with someone who does suck.

The only advantage to David Dukes reading this book is now I have to read it again to get the stink of his garbage voices and poor choices out of my head.
