About this listen

Colby Fischer is a bad boy with attitude and a chip on his shoulder. As a senior at a Southern California college, he knows this may be his last shot. He doubts he’ll ever become the hockey legend he dreamed of being as a kid, but he definitely doesn’t want to be an accountant. Things get interesting when he’s asked to train the new intern at his step-dad’s firm, who happens to be the troublemaker from his econ class. And the one guy Colby can’t stand.

Baseball is Sky Jameson’s life. He’s happy to be back at Chilton for his senior year, but he’s burned a few bridges and has a bit too much free time off-season. He could use the money and something to keep him busy until his season begins. But his accidental crush on his prickly coworker could be a problem. Colby is straight and Sky is in the closet. Their timing isn’t great, but the intense attraction is hard to deny. With his final season on the hockey team in the balance, Colby may have to decide if he’s ready to come out on the ice.

This was a steamy bi -awakening, sort of enemies to lovers romance.

I absolutely live for these kind of books and Lane Hayes definitely nailed this one!

I loved that the sports background was well researched and interesting to read.
I usually don't care much for sports talk, but this one made me want to know more.

Everything was perfect. Right from the relationship build up between the characters, one being closeted and the other being straight to the storyline and the final executive.

I am so thrilled that Michael Pauley continues to narrate this series and bring these amazing characters to life.

A bi-awakening kind of enemies to lovers romance!

This latest installment of Lane Hayes’ Out In College series is another great listen.

The story is being told from Colby’s POV. Sky shared his history & mentioned Max, well Max made an appearance. I skipped books 3 & 4 so I wasn’t familiar with Sky & his background. But it didn’t feel like I missed out on anything.

Colby’s treatment and anger towards Sky in the beginning was bothering me. Colby acted like a major a-hole. It seemed over the top even if he acknowledged it was misplaced. Thankfully, that didn’t last that long.

I enjoyed how the two MCs had chemistry from the very beginning and they were inevitable. I love seeing Colby’s growth, his acceptance of his own truth (even if I cringed at his struggles & ‘semi’ homophobic notions), and seeing him finally happy.
I was rooting for Sky, I was glad he gained a new set of family.

Michael Dean’s narration on this one was great too.

If you’re looking for a low-angst, high in steam, bi-awakening, sort-of enemies to lovers, alpha male athletes kinda read, then this one is for you. 💜

I will be the first to say I did NOT like Sky in the previous book. He was a colossal jackass. He played games and he was selfish. I wasn’t entirely sure he’d changed at the beginning of this book. Then his life crossed paths with a hot head, and after a bit, the cracks became visible. The hothead cooled off, and the jackass became more human, remorseful, and aware of where he went wrong. He wasn’t perfect, but he was trying to be better. That’s all any of us can really do. So, I forgave him, too. I loved that it was a hothead that became his person. Colby had his own demons to deal with. I loved their relationship when they hated each other, and I loved their relationship when they loved each other. Never say never, because life will say ‘Oh yeah? Just you watch.’
This book can be read alone, but it will enhance your experience if you read/listen to the previous books. The previous characters show up in the books that follow them. This one is no different. I highly recommend you read/listen to this book. It’s really good. All the feels, with minimum angst.

I adore all of Lane Hayes' stories, her characters are authentic, relatable, and multi-dimensional. All of her stories are well-thought out, with characters you fall in love with, and this one is no exception. Colby & Sky are both a little broken with baggage from their life experiences causing them both two be searching for answers to questions they may not even know. I thoroughly loved listening to them navigate through their fears and ultimately overcoming the fears and falling in love.

Michael Dean does an excellent job bringing this story to live, his voice is like no other.

5+ amazing stars - get this book to either read or listen to, you won't regret it!!

Confession: I’m kinda-sorta-maybe-absolutely addicted to Lane Hayes’s audiobooks. While I may not have every eBook of hers that’s been published, I do have every single one she’s ever released. Every single time she announces that she has the audiobook edition of her latest story, I may get a wee bit giddy with excitement. I swear, her audiobooks are like aural crack, and so, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that when I finally had her fifth Out in College audiobook waiting for me on my Audible app, I couldn’t get my headphones on quickly enough. Now, while I’ve always loved reading Hayes’s books, when they happen to be the kind that I become obsessed with, my expectations for the audio version are grow exponentially!

Out on the Ice brings together a hockey player and a baseball player—twenty-two-year-old Colby Fischer and twenty-three-year-old Sky Jameson, respectively. These two come from different universities, but with Sky needing to take a few summer courses at Colby’s school. There’s instant apprehension on Colby’s part when he first encounters Sky, but maybe a lot of that has to do with the fact that he’s got this unexpected fascination with the guy. Avoiding him isn’t an option, not when they share a class together and Sky is now interning at the accounting firm Colby’s stepfather is a partner at, and Colby is the one who has to train him. Strangely enough, the two forge a friendship, one that pretty much feels like more. And to make matters even more complicated, Sky is gay but in the closet and Colby is straight…isn’t he?

There was a lot of tension between Colby and Sky, and while that leapt off the page thanks to Lane Hayes’s writing, Michael Dean breathed new life into these characters and their story. Think of it as bringing what’s already an amazing book to even loftier levels. See, this is what I love about listening to this particular series of audiobooks from the combined efforts of Hayes and Dean—it’s experiencing something you already fell in love with once before and falling in love all over again, only this time, it’s even better than you remembered. I loved how Colby and Sky developed as main characters and how their relationship changed from two people who were wary of each other to becoming friends and then far more than either of them could’ve anticipated. The underlying message of self-acceptance is a recurring theme throughout the series, and Hayes and Dean never fail to portray it as well as they do. Five-plus stars for Out on the Ice.

How many favorites am I allowed to have? 5+ stars!

Ms. Hayes is perfect at writing new adult romance. She’s also been great with this series which focuses on athletes who want to stay in the closet to save their careers, each book having a similar theme, but each story is unique.

I think this could definitely be read (or listened to) as a standalone…it might help to not have the preconceived opinion of Skye going into this book although at the beginning he’s just as unlikeable as he is in previous books. It worked out in this one because to me, Colby wasn’t very likable at the beginning of this book either.

They, of course, end up figuring out how to be good guys and they work together. They were both just waiting for the right guy to come along. I like that there was no miscommunication and that Colby wasn’t willing to use a beard to hide his sexuality even when he was afraid to come out.

The side story of Colby and his stepdad was emotional and eventually heartwarming.

The vocal performer is the same for the rest of the series and he does a great job as he’s done with the rest of the series!

I’m assuming Elliot, Colby’s roommate will get a book next…he’s had some heartache it sounds like and he’s due a happy ending.

Another good listen in the series

This is book #5, in the Out In College series. This story can be read as a standalone novel. For reader understanding, and to avoid spoilers, I recommend reading this series in order.

Colby meets Sky in a summer class. They start as enemies, or so Colby thinks. Once they do get to know each other, the attraction intensifies and nearly burns him up.

Sky has no idea how to fix this confusion with Colby. It does not seem he will ever have a chance to be more. Is what he is feeling enough to take a chance on someone for a future?

This was a solid addition to the series. In the long awaited Hockey version, the MC's are both busy with their own sports and schedules when they meet in class. I loved the banter. I found the pace good, the heat at a good level, and the story read so good I could not put it down. The narrator does such a wonderful job on all the voices. They are so distinct and different, its almost like watching a movie from another room, where you cannot see the picture. Makes for a fun listen and a solidly good read.
