About this listen

Where love is concerned, the smallest steps are often the hardest to take - especially when you’ve guarded your heart as carefully as Iris Miller has. Still bruised from a relationship that crashed and burned, and all the meaningless hookups that followed, Iris has given up on love and buttoned her feelings up tight.

But when Cameron Hansen joins Iris’ law firm and her soccer team, and even starts hanging out in her favorite bookstore, everything gets turned upside down. Beautiful, open, and forward, Cam is impossible to ignore, and Iris is surprised to find herself intrigued. Cam’s straight, happily engaged, and simply looking for a friend - or so it seems.

London’s bitterly cold winter makes winning their soccer championship almost as difficult as keeping their feelings in check, being honest with each other, and trying not to fall in love. Iris and Cam are about to discover the meaning of taking chances and following your heart, even if it means getting hurt.

Mediocre

Way too long and the running around a tree like a dog chasing a squirrel was lack luster and annoying. Could have been a few chapters shorter. One pro: Amy Putt is one of my favorite narrators so I held on for that one reason.

Late 20 ladies w/ the emotional maturity of teens

The last 5 chapters are like listening to someone beating a dead horse. It got a little frustrating, especially Iris.

Very angsty

I did not care for the constant back and forth between the two main characters without much depth was annoying. It was hard to get through the book. The narrator was great, the story line was lacking relatable content.

An exciting new talent on the lesfic scene

I really, really enjoy this audiobook. I’ve listened to it twice. It’s impressive that this is the first book from this author, as it’s well constructed and extremely engaging. The characters are textured and I am 100% invested in the relationship between the two mains. The friendship Cam and Iris develop is sweet at first, and then deliciously angsty in a way that had the potential to be annoying but actually isn’t; it isn’t, because it registers as a very real scenario that many of us have been in.

Iris is pretty consistently wonderful (if a little frustratingly down on herself) throughout the story. At times I simultaneously cannot stand Cam and then completely understand her. We all know a Cam. We’ve all even been Cam at some point in our lives. Someone who can’t figure out and/or won’t act on what they want. Someone who is a nice person while also being magnificently passive, selfish, and un-self aware. Makes you want to punch them in the face and then grab them and say, “Sweetie, you can do this!” But I am all for the way this author (and Iris) leaves the responsibility for Cam’s growth up to Cam alone. It’s the way it should be, and watching her grow and (**SPOILER ALERT?**) get the girl is all the more gratifying for having seen her take back control of herself.

As for the narration, this narrator is great. Never listened to her before. She does an excellent job differentiating voices and acting out the dialogue. Her American accent takes some getting used to but you do acclimate. Would definitely listen to her again.

Good book

I liked this story. There wasn’t anything surprising or different about it, necessarily, but it was a fun read.

The narration was very well done.

Boring

If you are into the real-life drama of a small lesbian pool, this book is for you. But it is not what annoyed me. What annoyed me is the constant prolonged angst, the last few chapters were unbearable. Too much drama makes this book not entertaining.
The narrator is good though.
