About this listen

When a viral stunt goes off the rails, it’s chaos at the mall. Award-winning author Kellye Garrett explores how IRL the internet can get when someone almost dies in this taut and timely short story.

With sole custody of her brother, Kennedy has more to worry about than the antics of his favorite YouTube creators. But when one called Kidd launches an absurd challenge—with a large payday—to celebrate ten million subscribers, she winds up playing high-stakes hide-and-seek in the mall. After the game gets dangerous, she has to wonder: Is someone really out for the ultimate unsubscribe?

Kellye Garrett’s One Lucky Subscriber is part of Busybodies, a collection of quirky mysteries featuring amateur gumshoes who stumble upon peculiar cases. Calling all snoops! Read or listen to each arresting story in a single sitting.

This was lackluster

The ending was flat… not much else to say. This was an easy quick listen!

One Lucky Subscriber

One Lucky Subscriber by Kellye Garrett is a fast paced story that explores the fine line between online antics and real life danger. Kennedy is juggling the responsibilities of raising her brother, only to be drawn into a viral YouTube challenge hosted by the popular creator Kidd. What begins as a harmless, high stakes game of hide and seek in a mall quickly turns sinister. It was hard to stay engaged due to the unusual plot and I quickly lost interest. The twist at the end fell short for me, and there was little in terms of character development.

This was a Favorite in the Busybodies Collection

Ok - so I am in the minority when I say this was a favorite of mine in the Busybodies Collection. I totally got the premise because of reading the YA books with similar challenges back in the 90’s and early 2000s (very rough estimate here). Thoroughly enjoyed, don’t discount this one.

Boring

I read it twice (back to back)and I literally don’t remember it. I do remember falling asleep several times. I had it up to 1.75 speed and it still felt like I was drunk reading

Fun and interesting

A fun mystery with excellent voice talent. A couple of good twists and a unique setting added to the fun.
