About this listen

In this fast-paced historical thriller, the number one New York Times best-selling author introduces Archer, a WWII veteran forced to investigate a small-town murder - or risk returning to prison.

It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women.

The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail. Within a single night, his search for gainful employment - and a stiff drink - leads him to a local bar, where he is hired for what seems like a simple job: to collect a debt owed to a powerful local businessman, Hank Pittleman.

Soon Archer discovers that recovering the debt won't be so easy. The indebted man has a furious grudge against Hank and refuses to pay; Hank's clever mistress has her own designs on Archer; and both Hank and Archer's stern parole officer, Miss Crabtree, are keeping a sharp eye on him.

When a murder takes place right under Archer's nose, police suspicions rise against the ex-convict, and Archer realizes that the crime could send him right back to prison...if he doesn't use every skill in his arsenal to track down the real killer.

My wife and I chose this title on a lark and were pleased to find it a nice trip back to an earlier era. We found much of the language and a few of the situations to be throwbacks to the old Hardy Boys mysteries.

This was a totally refreshing listen for me. I couldn’t help but smile all through the end. A lovely plot and even lovelier narration. For a once in a very long time I found myself hoping the novel would keep going ha ha
Of course I am a fan of Baldaci but I still find myself grinning when he delivers a lovely piece

An absolutely refreshing listen

I listened while driving and the book was spectacular. Great older time references. I listened to first half of the book while hiking and the rest was in my car while driving. My Phone and my new Ford allowed me to play the book through the cars speakers. Fabulous... way to travel!

Great Listening!

I liked the story, I liked the characters.

Liked it but...

with this being a period piece, I assume that certain things from present day would be injected into the narrative, but I was pleasantly surprised that Baldacci stuck to the era. unlike some of his other stories, it wasn't predictable and kept me engrossed until the end.

Better than I expected

The narrator’s voice is alluring. I hated Jackie’s southern accent. It made her sound stupid.

Great story!

I purchased this audiobook to keep me awake while driving to a from work. The problem is once I started listening I couldn't put it down, but I had to. I couldn't wait for my next trip. Ballarin's narration was excellent. He drew you into every character and made you become one with their every emotion. The storyline was believable in every aspect and was a fast-moving thrill a minute. I thought I knew the ending by the time I was in the middle of the book, but in typical Baldacci fashion there was a cataclysmic twist that will lift you out of your chair. This is one of my favorite Baldacci novels ... don't miss it!
